Yup, that is how you want to rearrange the stack.
The cover should not need pressing.
The cover will set up a bit but will pull down with the screws if all is lined up.
If one of the plates is out of line and hanging up it is just there to piss you off, you will win eventually.
Once it does set in place do not tighten the screws down hard, just snug them. The ring gear bolts will hold it all together and the screws are captured in case one backs out.
