Need a Spot
Hey guys, I need some advise.

My timing belt broke while driving down the highway. How do I tell if the engine or head is in a bad way (other than opening it up)?

I'm told the valves could be bent..but then I've read that this could be a "non-interference" engine and that replacing the belt might be all that it needs.

Have any of you guys been through this?

If it's the SOHC 3.0L v6 for a gen I (up to 91) then from what I understand it should a non-interference engine and changing the belt is all that's needed.

If its the stock 6G72 (3.0l) from the Gen 1, you'll be ok.. just slap another timing belt on and go.. Don't forget to replace the waterpump, idler pulleys and drivebelts to make the job complete and pat yourself on the back for a job well done and that you've dodged the bullet this time.

Tensioner pulley as well and if it's leaking or old, possibly even the front seal.

Get a Mitsu Brand front main seal,,,,Get the improve harmonic balancer/ crank bolt and use the update torque on it...it's like 130 ft lbs instead of 85ft lbs.

my '01 24v 3.0 IS an interference motor. a 10mm nut got under my timing cover and took out the crank sensor, belt jumped, instantly bent every intake valve. $800 in parts and machine work.
