So today I get a slice in the sidewall of my tire and need to use my spare for the first time in 8 years. I've never had to to drop my spare since I bought the truck and today I find out a special key is needed

I remember on the last three Toys I owned you just slide the jack rod into the winch and turned. This damn thing needs a special looking lug key.

Anyone run into this?

Looks like I'm going to have to drill a hole in the middle and use an easy out to drop the tire and see how I'm going to remove this piece.

I'd pop by the dealer and see if they'd let you borrow theirs and see about ordering one.

No stock jacking tool kit?

That actually might be a spare tire lock; I understand ppl were having trouble with their spares being stolen when the Tacos first came out. Again, have the shop guys give it a look. My roomie has something similar for taking the theft lugs off her Corolla. If that's what it is, a good tire shop should have the tool to purchase.

Does it look like THIS ? I also see a couple on fleabay.

WOW... Yes, it look exactly like that although I don't have the part that slides onto the stock bar at the hook.

I'll need to look in my storage compartments a little closer..

Do you think the ones on eBay all keyed the same?

Thanks

Yeah I had the same shock after owning Hiluxs since 81. I too couldnt figure it out till I dug deep into my jack/ tire kit. I dunno wtf Toyota came out with a key for the spare tire. Who would want to steal a spare off of a Yota?

Here in SoCal I see Tacos with bike locks hanging down from their spares all the time.
Apparently, spare tire theft is either a real problem in these parts, or just a persistent rumor that has everyone spooked...

Where you're at, it's not a rumor. You're a Yota target.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
most manufactor's have a special key to get the tire down, and to make things more complicated each new model needs a new style key.
