I have a 2004 Isuzu Rodeo Direct Injection, automatic transmission.
I just returned from 10 months military duty and reported to the dealer for the 30k service at 30,400 miles.
I looked at the receipt and noticed he did more than was required, even for extreme use, pushing the cost up to $550....and I don't believe he did any more than an engine suck and pump. Next time I go with a specific list.
When looking over the receipt, I saw the transfer case line had an extra $2 charge. The line says ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $39.95 Replace Transfer Case Fluid (4WD) TOD units add $2.00 for ATF Fluid I805 39.95 Replace Transfer Case Fluid (4WD) TOD units add $2.00 for ATF Fluid 805 Rodriguez, FirstName Lic #: xxxx CIM $31.65 net $35.65 total 4 W500DB ATF DEX 3 Type $2.50 list $2.50 net $10.00 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So it appears to me they used 4 units of Dex III ATF fluid in the transfer case....and the line on the computerized billing called for it.
My manual, however, says the transfer case requires 5W30.
Anyone know for certain what transfer case fluid is required? Google didn't help.

Someone's got to know: ATF or oil in the transfer case?
Has anyone changed it?
Thanks.

Looking at Oreilly Auto Parts, it says that it takes 5w30 also. Richard <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Wayne, TOD TCs require ATF, as far as I understand. Do you really have TOD on your Rodeo (2004 Rodeo is a strange creature) ? If yes, then ATF is fine, to the best of my knowledge. If your TC is of non-TOD type, then I do not know.

I don't think it's TOD. Just a regular transfer case with a limited slip differential in the rear. I searched that website on Rodeo and couldn't find any reference. I do appreciate you looking it up and replying. Armed with only slightly more knowledge, I'm going to call the dealer today.

I don't think it's TOD, just a regular LSD.
Wayne, you are being confusing.
TOD=transfer case
LSD=differential (or a hallucinogenic drug).
What are we going for here?

LSD = Limited Slip Differential.
I thought the 2004 4x4 Rodeos had that, as well as some earlier models, usually indicated by the correct code or the fins on the differential.

Wayne,first off, thank you for your military service. Your question pertained only to your transfer case and, along with the billing info you provided, it appears that (transfer case) is indeed the issue at hand. If you have Torque ON Demand (TOD) It uses Dextron III ATF or its equivalent. Look on your data plate and see if it has an option code of "7HA". I believe, at least on earlier models, that was the option code for the TOD.

I thought the 2004 4x4 Rodeos had that, as well as some earlier models, usually indicated by the correct code or the fins on the differential. Wayne, the differential (possibly LSD in your case) and the TC (possibly TOD in your case) are two different and unreleated devices located in the different parts of the vehicle, serving different purposes. You were talking about TC originally. If yours is of TOD type (check your dashboard signs) then you need ATF. If your TC is of non-TOD type (as all pre-2004 Rodeos had), then you need 5W-30. The differential is another story, it needs a special gear fluid.

You guys are correct--TOD is in the transfer case, LSD is the differential. I had my head up my rear. Sorry for the confusion. If I could go back and edit everyone's replies....
I believe some troopers, the Axiom, and the Vehicross had TOD. Don't quote me on that.
I will double check my service manual to verify it says Transfer Case and what fluid goes in there. I will also check the index for TOD.
