Hi all

I lurk around here once in a while, just not alot of time to go on the net these days. Just wanted to pass on some info for any 2.8 owners. First of all, be prepared to do the front seal on the diesel pump, which means the whole thing needs to get ripped out to replace the $20.00 seal. You will now this needs to get replaced if your Pajero stalls out in the morning after driving a few hundred feet. This can also easily be checked be removing the fuel filter, if the seal is going, filter will be full of oil. My brother picked his up at the end of July, and by the second day it was showing symptons already. I got my wife a shorty with a low 57,000 km., absolutely mint, it went about a month here and then it started. We always use a diesel additive, so I am pretty sure they are all on the verge of being like this no matter what the km. or service history. Looked up on POCUK and this pretty well seems to be the norm in the UK too, if it has not happened it is going to soon.

Secondly, since we have had the pumps out twice now I took a good look at the frost plugs. 50mm for any one that wants to know. I remember reading somebody talking about a Temro screw in blockheater. Acording to the Temro website this plug would go into the left rear of the block. This hole is used to feed the heater core, so this will not work on the JDM Pajeros.

Thirdly, Filters are the same as the 2.5. Baldwin BD28 for oil and Baldwin BF7534 for Fuel. Have replaced both already. Both available at Acklands Grainger. Air filter looks the same too, did not replace it yet since it is new.

Hope this helps.

Great info. Thanks for the contribution. I'm trying to decide between a 2nd paj with the 2.8, or something a little different.

If you want to try something different, try a Bighorn. Totally reliable, every bit as powerful as the Pajero 2.8. Not as refined inside as a pajero, but I really like the one I have been driving for the last year. And one major thing, not one thing has gone wrong with it, hit the key and go. Both Pajero's we've had both ended up with pump problems and other various glitches. Still like them though!!

Wow, lots of info that I've been searching for for a while... thank you.

The oilfilter thing is surprising. Every number I've been able to come up with says that the filters for the 2.5 and 2.8 are different. But you've already used the 2.5s filter on a 2.8?

The fuel filter is the same acc to my numbers, and you've found the same. Good. Also, air filter is also showing the same, so when you go to get one, just check out stickied numbers above, for the 2.5 air filter.

Too bad about the screw in frost plug heater. I was really hoping that would work. I'll have to check the temro app's to see if a 50mm would work somewhere else. Have you put any pre-heating plans in place yet?

As far as the seal, where are you finding it, and do you have a part number for it? Any chance you took any pics as you were replacing it? Is it much of a job? Any specialized tools needed? Does the pump need to be retimed after?

Thanks for any more info you can give us, it will definitely help future owners of the 4M40, as they become more popular here. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I had the filter left over from my 2.5, honestly when I changed the oil on the 2.8 I just took a chance on it, reached up and it screwed right on after looking at the one I pulled off

I think I may try one of those circulating tank heaters from Temro, or maybe one of the lower rad hose ones, have not decided yet.

My brother got both the seals from ebay UK. The only reason was since it was advertised as having instructions on how to do the seal the "EASY WAY". I saved my old one so I can go match it up here since I am sure they should be easy to come by. As for the instructions that came with it, no matter how basic and simple they were (one sheet of paper with 3 pics and about 10 lines of explanation)it was actually very, very helpful the first time. A good 4-5 hour job working in my garage at home. The only special tools someone may need is a gear puller to get the pump gear off and to get to the seal and I had to fashion a screwdriver with a small kinda hook with a dremal to pull the old seal out. Both times by following the basic directions we did not have to retime the pump, went right back to were they were before they were removed. Both started right back up without a problem. I WOULD however, If I new someone here in Edmonton that could actually properly set the pump timing and properly tune these things ( like I believe CVI in Richmond) get this done afterwards.

When I have a chance one day I will see if I can get the part number for the seal here and post the instructions I got. I wouldn't be surprised if there won't be alot of seal replacing going on most of these 2.8 coming in.

PHIL,

Tim and the boys will have all the answers for you.

The pump seal problem seems to be endemic to the UK, while it is nearly unheard of here.

Other oil filter info I have. Crossed from Mitsubishi UK http://www.mitsubishi-uk.com/paj_eng.php 4m40 filter ME201871 to the Cummins website cross reference http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/catalog/jsp/index.jsp?_locale=en . When you cross it comes out to a LF3830.

I forgot, when you cross a Baldwin BD28 on the Cummins site it comes out to a LF3564 which is pretty much the same size as a LF3830 but includes a bypass valve in the filter.

Does anyone know, does the factory filter on a 4m40 have a bypass valve?

My records show the Mitsu part No for the oil filter to be LLME013343.

My experience (here) is that Mitsu filters are cheaper than after-market, so I buy only Mitsu.
