No I meant price wise 39 is cheaper than 54.....Yea I knew that rifle was 54.

Ah...okay. At about 40 cents a round for 54R, though, I'm not complainin'.

already have a Mossberg 12 ga pump, S&W 7 shot .357, Kimber Custom II .45, and Springfield sub compact 9mm.

All stay loaded except for the S&W....plain ol' dove shot, and Speer gold dots in the pistols.

This gun will mainly just be for recreation...don't know if I will actually use it to go hunting.

Am thinking of either a stag or a CMMG...have not heard of either before...are they good? Here are the two I'm looking at. evil-black-rifles

PS...how do I check the results of my poll without voting?

Well in that case, you definately want a rifle chambered for 5.56, imo. As previously stated with 5.56 you can shoot either 5.56 or .223. Make sure it has a chrome lined barrel and go with one of the major AR15 manufactures. Most of the good AR15s out there are 5.56 chambered.

5.56 is not always easy to find, but if you can find military spec stuff, usually the old version of the round, you get a little better round that is spec'd for combat, higher velocity and including better flash supprecant.

Winchester white box Q3131 5.56 is usually spec'd to the old M193 military round and I think is pretty good stuff for the price. Usually cheap enough to plink with, but also a good defense round.

CMMG, or Stag Arms are 2 of the best bang for your buck ar platforms. I bought a rifle from CMMG about 6 months ago, and love it. Do yourself a favor, and start stocking up on 30 round mags.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, BUT....

And the ever present 12 racking sound will stop just about anyone dead in thier tracks. Only gun I keep loaded. 1st round in non-lethal 80 durometer slug, the remaining 6 are OO buckshot.

This is about the worst advice, and misinformation you can give out about defensive shooting.

First off.. racking a shotgun to "scare someone" in your home is a terrible idea for several reasons.
Then.....
Loading up with non lethal ammo??? Uhmmm no. Another terrible idea

The only time you should EVER shoot someone is if they are threatening your life, or others. You shoot to kill in that case, and non lethal ammo is a GREAT way to get your ass into a lengthy legal battle about injuring someone on purpose.

Home defense gun.....

IF you are not capable with a pistol, Get a shotgun WITH A SHOULDER stock, and a flashlight mounted on it. Load it with buckshot, and IF you find the need to "clear" your home, bring a cell phone with so you can call the cops.

Shooting someone is a total last resort because they are trying to KILL YOU.... NOT because they're in your home stealing your TV.

If they find him dead in my house, there will be at least a knife in his hand, with my blood already on it...

And I much prefer #1 buck to 00. Lots more pieces to hit him with, but still big enough to do a wad of damage. There's what, 7-8 00 shot in a 3" 12ga???

Not responsible for advice not taken...

Ive read studies showing a .223 penetrates much less than a handgun round, seems they break up faster.

Technically a .223 should not be able to penetrate your home and the neighbors, although a handgun round will.

Go back and read the demostration that I posted earlier in the thread and you'll see that's not quite the case.

I live in Texas...no ammo is hard to find...it is just getting outrageously(sp?) expensive.

Thanks for the heads up..already plan on getting 2 extra 30 round clips...legal in Texas.

Why I keep hollows in my pistols...And anyone breaking into my house to steal a tv OR threaten my life is getting blasted....they are threatening your safety(life) just by being in your home without permission.

And I guess I don't really need to see the results of the poll cause I didn't know that .223 and 5.56 were pretty much the same.
