Hello folks! I just bought a pretty well built 1978 CJ7 and I have a couple of questions. I am new to Jeeps but have been Four Wheeling for years with Early Broncos. They just soak up too much cash and gas anymore. The Jeep I bought has a 304 in it with a 2 bbl carb. I am considering a swap to a 4 bbl or TBI. If I go the carb route would a Edelbrock Performer manifold and a Holley 470 CFM Truck Avenger be a decent set-up or would I need the cam and lifters as well? If I go with TBI would it perform better with a 4 bbl manifold? The Jeep has stock flares on it and 10.5 wheels with 33 BFG Muds on them. Would Bushwacker Pocket Flares have too much overhang and look like crap?

So out of curiosity, what is wrong with the 2 bbl carb? You say you left the Bronco and went to a CJ7 because it cost to much on fuel, and now you want to put on a 4 bbl carb which will likely get worse mileage than the 2 bbl you currently have.

Guyver... Sounds like a nice rig. As for intakes, the twice barrel will give you all the fuel air mixture that ride can handle. Putting a 4 barrel and different intake on there will give you a few more rpm above five grand...but how often are you planning on running her up there?
If you just MUST make an intake change do it with a throttle body.. It is a far better swap than a 4 barrel.
If it runs nicely, which I think you have indicated, just keep it stock.
Now if you intend to pull the 304 and do some head work and install a real good camshaft with little overlap and high lift, headers and dual exhausts, by all means put the big intake and a nice 400 or LESS cfm carb on there.. BUT just adding the carb will only make some noise as it trys to burn more fuel.

It'll soak up some dosh, don't you worry. As for the flares - I run 12.5 tires and had to get flares that covered them to pass inspection. I got 7" wide ones IIRC (They were the widest I could find) and they just cover the tire. I think they give it a better look - more square/ less tippy. Not familiar with the BW's but if they're not more than about 5-6" I think you'll be pleased. And there will be a bit less muck smacking you in the back of the head and inside of the windshield when you go in the mud hole.

I just wanted to squeeze some more power out of the Jeep. I figure even at the worst it can't beat the 6 to 8 mpg I was getting with my built EB with a 351.

This is what I needed to hear, some good tech advice. I just wanted some more juice out of her. At some point in the future I will drop in a Chevy with fuel injection for that I guess. Right now I will just enjoy the ride! What is needed for the 350 swap? I am counting on at least a tranny adapter for the TH400 and motor mounts. Anything else outside of all the 350 stuff?

You will need axles and a transfer case to go with that 350.

Not with 44's and a 300...just a tranny to t-case adapter, and motor mounts, like he said. Check his sig.

If and when I get around to a 350 swap I think the drivetrain is ready for it. It would be a stock 350, nothing axle breaking.

If you have a Motorcraft 2100 2V carb, which was stock on most of the 304's, it is a very good carb. Aside from possibly needing a rebuild, there's really no reason to change it.

A (GM, or other) HEI distributor & larger wires will allow more spark plug gap (.045) and more advanced timing. This is a popular upgrade.

Here's a good writeup on a 350 swap...
