I don't think I've come across this problem in the forum anywhere.

When I have the steering cranked over to make a hard left turn I get a metallic pop or grinding sound from the front passenger side axle assembly area. It also happens in lighter turning but when I am making a sudden suspension raise/drop i.e. a large curb sized obstacle (4-6"). I would like to fix this problem if possible before I do any trailing as I would hate to have something break while on the trail.

Any thoughts?

Need a Spot
sound like the early signs of a CV joint failing.
Are the boots cracked or split?
Raise that side up and with the wheel cranked hard over, spin the wheel and listen for the noise while checking the deep folds of the boots for splits.
It might not make the noise without being under load, though.

I look at the CV boots regularly as I know the problems that can happen if a CV boot isn't repaired quickly. The boots are not cracked and are not/have not leaked any grease since I have owned the truck.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Is the noise just a single "POP", or does it continue to grind as you turn?

Sounds more like the steering stops.

It's more of a pop. It doesn't continue to grind but will pop again after 5 to 10 feet if I'm making a larger turn and don't back off on the steering. I've check for clearence issues and any sort of rubbing and I don't see anything. It's a pretty loud sound. Is is possible its a tie rod end or something like that?

The sway bar rubber is good on the bar itself, but is almost gone and cracked through on the bar ends on both sides of the vehicle.

I think Hazy's got it. Take 2 minutes to put a dab of grease on your steering stops and see if the noise goes away.

It's the steering stops. When at full steering lock, there's a plate on the (a arm?) and an adjustable bolt stop to limit the steering turn on the spindle(?) that move in relationship to each other as the suspension cycles in the bump. When new, there's a rubber boot on the bolt end, and you're supposed to grease the end where it rides on the stop to eliminate the pop sound. You can either grease the bolt head or the plate stop to eliminate/lessen the sound, or just live with it. Use waterproof grease...

I've never tried to find a new boot, but the dealer may be able to get one.
