I saw this on another board:

Quote
Senator ObamaÆs ôRedistributing Wealthö comments are getting a lot of air play lately and I personally donÆt think a lot of people have actually grasped the complete concept of the idea and how it may affect them. Which led me to the idea to that sometimes you actually have to show people how these conceptual economic ideas actually work in reality.

Not to knock anyone voting for Obama, but it goes to show you how Obama's plan may upset some hard working people.

Today, on my way to lunch as I pulled into the restaurant, I passed a homeless guy that was on the corner, holding a hand lettered cardboard sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the Money.ö

Once inside the restaurant the waiter taking our order had on an "Obama 08" campaign pin. We kept the conversation professional all during lunch and his service was excellent. When the bill came, I decided not to tip the waiter and explained to him while he had given me exceptional service, that his campaign pin made me feel he obviously believes in Senator Obama's plan to redistribute the wealth. I told him I was going to redistribute his tip to someone that I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside on the corner. He stood there in disbelief and angrily stormed away.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $5 and told him to thank the waiter inside, as I had decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy looked at me in disbelief but seemed grateful.

As I got in my car, I realized this rather unscientific redistribution experiment had left the homeless guy quite happy for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn.

Well, I guess this redistribution of wealth is going to take a while to catch on, with those doing the work.

I would suggest you all try it and see if your results are different.

I guess what you see depends entirely on where you sit...... and on the determination of whose ox is gored.

Frank

My goofy hippy throwback brother is voting Obama. I asked him if he thought he was rich, he said "not at all".
I said well you have a good job, a house almost paid for and car and new computer, how is that not rich compared the panhandler on the street. Why don't you give that guy your car, I asked?
He said because I'm not that rich. So, if that is the case, where does Obama and Pelosi draw lines? So far Biden and Obama can't decide what the line is. Sooner or later either by lay offs plant closings and taxing of everyone with a job, Obama will try and get into our pockets.

I love the waiter story.

That was awesome Frank.

I think what really made me laff (finally) was looking at the electoral vote and seeing the South with red.

Ironic a Southern Democrap would vote for a Republikan.

This assumes that you make enough to disribute! Come on... be real.

From what I have seen I think I should send all of you a fiver.

And, yes I'm OK with that.

A friend's thoughts on this whole zoo is that both candidates are taking us to socialism; McCain will just take a little longer to get there.

I was really hearing a lot of 'government' in that last debate from both sides. Ugh.

Taxing wealth at progressive rates discourages income achievement and general success Those who can look for tax dodges and shelters and spend an increasing amount of income on accountants. Those who have talents that are needed internationally find other countries more appealing. I remember the '70s very well and don't want to return to the days of "Jimma" Carter.

Constitutionalists in particular should have issue with the idea of equality under the law..... a progressive tax doesn't treat everyone the same. There is also the issue of taxation relative to representation. Why should 5% of the people pay over 50% of the total US income tax revenue, yet have only 5% of the voting power? Eventually, you have the inmates running the asylum.... which is pretty much what we're seeing now.

We'll never have the idealistic "one tax dollar paid/one vote" simplicity - although it's simple, it's probably not really fair..... but neither is soaking "them" for "our" benefit.

If anyone wants to see it, here are the pro/con arguments for a progressive tax - much like we had in the '70s:

I'm OK with that, too. PM me and I'll send you my address so you can mail the five-spot...... but don't ask for my bank account # so you can make it a direct deposit.

Here's something that might help you understand the definition of 'rich'. The average 'poor' person in the United States has a standard of living greater than 95% of the rest of the world (hence the obesity problem among the 'poor'). Therefore, in a world sense, just about every person in the United States is 'rich'.

Obama could tax the 'rich' in the U.S. to give to the 'poor and middle class', and probably will try to if elected. But will someone then decide that we should become a better member of the international community and tax all of us 'rich Americans' to benefit the 'poor and middle class' of the world?

I am frightened when I see socialists with their eyes on America, but I am really afraid when they start talking about the rest of the world as well.
