I saw Kevin C's post on the Yokohama AT for snow. I recall a few years back that Pirelli Scorpion's were pretty highly rated for snow and had decent treadlife for road riding.
What's the word with today's tires?
Looking at 31's on 15x8" rims.
TIA!

Ray I'd go with the BFG ATs I got over 80k on my last set rotating 5 tires. Would have gone farther if I hadnt let it go so long with a front end alignment after Pismo Russ

Ray,
Having used the 33" Mudstar tires up on Emigrant Trail in the snow this past January and watching Russ and Joanna with their BFG A/T's, I'd not run a mud tire. Russ and Carlos aired down at the beginning of the trail, Joanna and I aired down at the end, when we turned around. Russ and his Toyota simply went farther than I could with my Raider. I've had BFG A/T's on two other vehicles, my crashed silver Montero and my '77 Dodge. Both performed well with moderate to deep snow.

BFG ATs have worked well for me in snow. Deep snow plugs them up though, same as mud. Procomp MTs were good in deep snow, but not wonderful on the road with light snow.

I would also say BFG ATs. Considering you are going to use them mostly on the road, they will out last an aggresive thread by along way.

well, im actually wondering if more of a truck tire versus off road tire (even an AT tire) would be fine for my needs?

Yes, use a truck tire and when you need to drive in snow put on some chains!

well I'll only use them for snow on ski runs which means light snow otherwise caltrans will shut down the roads. If I need to go deeper, I'll run my MT's.

BFG AT. I use my montero as my DD /ski rig. In the winter I drive in the snow every weekend and a few times in the week for night skiing. With the BFG AT'S, Its nice not having to chain up because of them having the winter rating. They are a bad ass tire on compact snow and ice. They even do good in snow up to 2-3 feet deep as I have tested.

BFG ATs have worked well for me in snow. Deep snow plugs them up though, same as mud. Procomp MTs were good in deep snow, but not wonderful on the road with light snow. Slush does the same thing. The Yoko A/T and A/T+ far out perform the BFG A/T in deep snow, wet snow, mud and rain both off and on road. The BFG doesn't perform as well on ice, either. The BFG will last longer on the highway, however. Edward Edward
