The town I live in just spend 80K to purchase A GPS parking ticket system. The meter maid drives by and the system takes a photo of your license plate and GPS location. They drive buy later and if your still there you get a ticket.

Anyways my wife drops the kid of at pre-school, comes home and parks near the same spot. She gets a ticket. The good news is she filled up with gas and has a receipt. We also have witnesses, you have the sign the kids in to the teacher.

So I'm fighting the ticket, the big brother GPS thing has gone to far !

They use a similar device here too...but they use it for finding stolen cars/plates. I think also for finding vehicles registered to people with warrants out on them.

Fredericksburg uses them for finding residents with unpaid fees:

I guess meter maids are getting to fat and lazy to get out of their cart and chalk the tires. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

It seems like the City just got hosed, on a bogus system, someone on the council likely has ties to the company. The question I have is that w/o the car being equipped w/gps tag and the tag being monitored by the system, how does the system know the car didn't move. Or is the space a non-pay parking space but is limited to a time limit? Also I don't think civilian(non-military) gps systems are accurate to the exact spot for terrorist reasons, as least they didn't used to be, even w/pinging turned on.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

What you guys are missing is that you are assuming the city is issuing tickets for criminal offenses, hence there would be some reason to care about precision tracking and right vs. wrong. Instead, the city is issuing a parking tax, for the purpose of revenue.

You see, the principle is very simple:

1) We will catch and ticket many of the people who are staying too long and get the money, so the system works.
2) Many people ticketed improperly will not fight it, because it is cheaper not to miss work and just pay the fine, so we get the money and the system works.
3) There's still a good chance a judge, paid by the system, will rule for the system and we get the money and the system works.

Parking tickets are just like speeding tickets, i.e. a source of revenue. If they really wanted to prevent speeding and illegal parking they would use jail time as punishment. Instead they charge just enough of a fine to keep people from revolting.

Good luck fighting it!
