Well, I'm not quite sure of what you're looking at due to your terminology, but it sounds like the hard line that comes off the top of the fuel pump mounting bracket is broken off. If that is the case, your only option is to get another mounting bracket. I had a similar thing happen when I replaced the fuel pump on my '89, and ended up getting a fuel pump assembly shipped to me from a pick-n-pull, then mounting my new fuel pump onto the bracket. If that's the case, you can search my user name and fuel pump for the posts I submitted a couple of years ago about that adventure Might be some useful info there, especially about connecting the fuel lines up -- not all the fittings rotate and I suspect that's why the previous owner snapped the hard line off.

Ok well tell me what terms are confusing you? Ill try to reiterate my position again

Replacing in tank sending unit
Hard lines that connect to the top of it have been snapped and snapped VERY close to the top of the sending unit leaving insufficent room for a splice of the hard lines to happen there
Waiting on a new and hopefully complete sending unit
Do the lines just disconnect farther up so that I can disconnect them and replug them into my new sending unit?

- All vehicles have a sending unit to tell the dash how much gas is in the tank.
- All of course have fuel pumps of some sort. (Modern vehicles that is.)
- Some fuel pumps are in the tank.
- Some have seperate in-tank pumps and sending units.
- Mitsu in-tank units are combined sending+pump???
- The stealer only sells the whole pump/unit. New is ~$385!

Your problem sounds like the PO cut the fuel lines that pass through the bulkhead cover of the unit. I would not be inclined to trust a 1/4" stub even with FI clamps.

Your choices then are:

1. Get a new unit from the stealer.
2. Try for a JY unit. Should be good as long as not rusted to heck. (Note, there is a Pull-A-Part near me with a 91 that I plan on visiting this weekend.)
3. You can repair the one you have by fitting it with new lines. I had a past 92 where the same lines rusted out, leaving me in a similar boat. Search my user for a thread. Also, there was a subsequent thread from another member on the same. (I'll try and search too...)

I fixed my 92 at the time because it was my DD, and I did not have any local JY options, and there was no way I could afford the $385. It ran fine for a year until I sold it. The guy who bought it was local and I never heard from him on a problem. That was five years ago now.

Here is a past thread on the fuel pump repair...

Confusion is due to the Montero having a fuel pump and a separate sending unit for the fuel gauge. Perhaps the MightyMax V6 is different, but here's a picture of the top of the fuel tank where the pump and gauge sending unit are accesssed.

[Linked Image]

On the left is the fuel pump, on the right the gauge sending unit. On the fuel pump, there are two hard lines that drop down and to the right... one has a screw-on connector and is the high pressure line. Here's a picture of the one that broke off of mine:

[Linked Image]

And finally, a picture of the fuel pump bracket -- minus the fuel pump -- which is what I think you'll need to replace to solve your snapped hard line issue:

[Linked Image]

In my case, I snapped the hard line because I thought the manual said it had a flare nut on it. In reality, the flare nut was on the other end (towards the engine) of the rubber fuel line connected to the high pressure side. Loosen and remove that connection so the rubber hose can spin freely without flexing and then attach the hose to the high pressure line at the fuel pump. Then finally reconnect the rubber hose to the flare nut and tighten to specs. Flare wrenches in the appropriate sizes are a good investment!

As I said, maybe the MightyMax is different. If so, post up some pics and I'm sure there will be more help forthcoming if you need it

that fuel line setup is typical mitsubishi. having the fixed end at the sending unit and the loose flare fitting at the other end of the rubber hose.

I supsect they are but I'm afraid I don't know for sure. Hopefully one of the MightyMax folks on the board will chime in.
