It was quite painless. It was all done in 3hrs. They even did an alignment. They also pointed out numerous things that were in need of repair which I knew about, but one I didn't. They said the wheel bearings were going bad because the noticed a lot of 'play'. What kind of 'play' are they talking about? I don't hear any of the normal whining noise generally associated with a bearing going out?

Jack up the truck and grab the wheel at the top and bottom and see if there is play. Don't grab it at the sides, that would find play in the steering parts.

Which bearing is likely bad...the hub or outer...or should I expect to change both?

When I took my truck to the dealer to have the steering recall done, they were helpful enough to let me know of some important maintenance that needed to be done as well- they said my fuel filter really needed to be changed. Strange that they would come to that conclusion, since I had recently swapped a diesel in, and the filter was just fine...
I think they were just trying to drum up some business. Something tells me they wouldn't have had the correct filter in stock- I should've taken them up on the offer, just for the fun of it! (Not that you shouldn't pay attention to what they said... but at least keep their possible motives in mind).

The play could be something as simple as the spindle nuts being loose. Just re-torque them and it would go away.
Still a good idea to inspect and repack your wheel bearings though. Especially if it hasnt been done in years, and you find some play.

Makes you wonder what some of these guys really know.

My FSM actually has no maintanance interval or replacement info for the fuel filter <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> When I rebuilt the motor, I did it then, just because it was nice and easy. PITA any other time.

My Chilton's has it at 80k for fuel filter changes. I could see why the dealership would tell you they don't change them anymore, it is a PITA w/the 3.0's
