I'd def like to find one of these tracks. I dont mind driving a couple hours to get there. I've been wanting to test the VR4's max and see how this AWD beauty does

I am getting in here a bit late, Looks like you had a sweet day on the track Scott.
Watching your vid makes my wife wish she did not sell our Miata. Damn honest track cars. We will get another one someday. We sure do not lack for track cars though.
Plus we get our share of seat time in borrowed Spec Miatas.

Angelo,
Ohh get ready for a big hurtin on the pads and tires on your 3K. You really do need track tires on the 3K cause you will blister the fronts if you run street rubber.

Yeah, you are right about that! The VR4 has had upgrades in brakes, but tires, not really. This car is not light Pushing close to 3500lbs. Would be nice to have a set of racing rims and tires. Any recommendations? I'm still new to the street/performance cars. I've had a offroader for the past 10 yrs

Yeah, tell me about it. I havent been wheeling in 2 yrs But I would def like to do both sometime next year in 09, so hopefully that should be enough time for both of us. Just call whenever you have free time.

btw, the new restaurant is close to UNCC, actually, both restaurants. You should come by for lunch or dinner sometime

Perhaps it would be cheaper, for both of you, if you co-drive Reuben's Miata. Cars in the 3500 lb range are pretty rare to see on track, and they're always driven by guys who have a lot more coin than me. What really sticks out in my mind is that despite the Supra's awesome reputation as a street car, I have never seen one turning laps at an HPDE. I have seen some porky cars though, a 350Z, lots of 3200 lb Corvettes, but then again a lot of those guys don't push their cars very hard, so they don't run through tires & brakes as often as they can afford to. And I did see one track-prepped Cadillac CTS-V, which is a 3800 lb car, but the guy had taken out some unnecessary weight and was running Hoosier R6s.

My dad instructs for a big Mazda group, and I try to make their events so I get to meet up with him. They usually do at least 2 weekends at VIR every year. When they release the 2009 schedule, I'll let you know when I'll be down there.

You may be able to come up with some takeoffs. Toyo, Hankook, Yokohamas and many others. For a first outing the overall grip is not real important, Its just not worth loosing a good set of street tires. Most street rubber is short lived at the heat levels on track.
Look into a local chapter of the BMW club AUDI club or NASA and check there drivers school schedule. You will be out with an instructor guiding you. Can be a bit frustrating but the learning is worth it. Getting some good instruction on how to transition from brakes to turn in is real important in a heavy car. When you get it right the speed will come in naturally with less wear and abuse to the car. Doing it wrong can smoke your front tires off in one session.
Then look for some track days to get some seat time in.

I hear ya Scott. Driving in Reubens ultra lite Miata would be cheaper in the long run. I would like to atleast get my VR4 on a track just to enjoy it a lil bit. Maybe pushing it to its limits might be too extreme right now.. more than likely, I'll probably just have a normal fun day at the track.

Never hurts to learn new things on the track. Would love to go to a school, but no time for that. I used to have a BMW a long time ago, so I did have lots of practice in that.

One thing tho.. I watch these Japanese shows/clips of race tracks and modified street cars (probably with race tires). Whats the deal with pressing the gas with the heel while pressing the brake in between gears, rev matching coming into or out of a curve?

Naa, when you are on a track, you push limits. That is the big benefit to track time. It provides a safe place to explore and learn. All of todays cars are to bloody fast to push limits on the street.

Footwork. That sounds like classic heal - toe. At a minimum during a downshift you need to raise the engine revs so the car does not get unsettled during the clutch release.
But there is much more to footwork, especially in todays heavy nosed cars. There is a fair amount of brake application to balance a car mid turn and exiting a turn. Most cars need a light to moderate brake application when the throttle is open to get them to rotate and remain settled during the exit phase of a turn. Commonly called "left footing".
When I set up a FWD car for racing, the throttle must be wide open from turn in to the track out of a turn. If you lift throttle mid turn the car will spin out real quick. With this setup there is less need for the use the brake to reset the car midturn. It makes it real easy to tighten or open your exit when tracking out. Makes the car fast.

Cheers, Charlie
