After reading CapnCrunch's post on brake failure, I think a post on brake upgrades would be fitting.

I just upgraded to a 35 inch tire (pictures will be coming soon enough) and I think a lot of people upgrade tires without upgrading brakes...it does take more force to have the same stopping power with a larger tire.

I found these online: http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/performanceparts/Mitsubishi/Montero/Brakes/Brake_Lines

Anyone else know other options to make sure our brakes do not fail?

I havent upgraded my brake lines yet, which is on my loooong (postponed) to-do list, but I have upgraded to sloted rotors from Power Slot. They came with free Hawk Pads, but quickly realized why they were free , so I ended up going with the factory pads which I'm happy with the combination.

Keep us updated when you do your brake line upgrade

I've only heard that Goodridge stainless steel lines are good and are offered for Gen I, II, & III montero's unlike the ones you posted which are only for newer Monty's.

On the other hand, Goodridge's are also nearly $200!!

mark, good idea, but I would first invest in some 3.15 t-case gears, then you don't need brakes, you can let the engine braking do it for you. plus, ask angelo, over heating your tranny is not a cool thing to do, so those gears are dual purpose for you.

I dont think 3.15 tcase gears will do you much good for an emergency stop on the highway....I dont know many people who drive around in low range on the freeway...but yea compression braking is nice on the trail.

i am working on the t case gears. I talked to him today and he is working up the price.

I already hit a deer once due to brake failure. I don't need to do that again. Running 35s now only increases my chances. Any other help with brakes would help me out. Right now I have that I can only upgrade the rubber hoses. Is there anything else?

wouldn't new factory rubber lines be a sufficient replacement?

they probably would be an good replacement. but its not an upgrade. with larger tires it increases the rotating mass which is a lot harder on your brakes...it makes your truck seem like it weighs twice as much so twice the force on the brake pedal is needed to stop those monster tires.

My JDM GEN II has single piston front brakes (stupid), so that is on my "to do" list along with stainless lines. I didn't know powerslot made rotors for our trucks. that is an excellent way to go to reduce brake fade if your brakes get hot!

Stay away from the cross-drilled/slotted rotors I see all over ebay for our rigs. cross drilled rotors is the worst thing you could put on your truck if your brakes are going to be taking any kind of heat. they crack and can fall apart in extreme conditions...and they don't offer any more cooling than regular slotted rotors.

I agree, but my point is, can new factory lines handle the extra braking force needed for emergency stops on trucks with bigger tires? Most of us have pretty old trucks with the original lines still on them and so may be new factory lines would be enough of an 'upgrade' over the old lines, but then may be not

New factory lines should not burst no matter how hard you mash the pedal..Keep in mind Captains were aftermarket and were most likely defective.
