Body Damage is Cool
I just put all that work in my Kia and had plans to finish it in the next few weeks and now this happens. On my way to work today I got off the freeway and come up to the first light and steem was coming out of the hood. I looked at the guage and the needle was climbing fast. I pulled over and popped the hood and coolent was all over the right side of the engine bay. I felt the radiator cap and it was just bearly warm. I opened the cap and no preasure. I had some antifreeze in the back so I added some and after about a 1/2 gallon it started boiling. I got towed the rest of the way to work and after it cooled off it was very hard to start and no bottom end power. I think my thermos stat stuck closed and I don't know if I blew a head gasket or what, all the hoses look good and when I let it warm up its hard to tell where the steem is coming from. This could be bad.

Dennis

P.S.

Hey it looks good though!

That sucks, but hope for the best. The Sportage engine is pretty tough.

Dennis,

My guess is the head gasket, but you could have also toasted the plugs, coils, or the ECU could be stuck in high temp mode where it is shutting down fuel flow to keep the engine from over heating again.

I get a similar thing when my AC fan kicks on when I turn on the AC. The engine lugs down and there is no low end power.

Hope for the best for ya.

Hey that sounds like that would suck. I just bought a Kia, and was woundering if any one makes a new front spring and spacer combo. Or is it just the front spacers. If it just spacers, I can always take a dana 35 from a wrangler and fab up some coil spring perches from a rubicon kit.

Well it doesn't look very good. I did a compression test last night and it came out 1-90, 2&3-60, and 4-85. I think 2&3 might be bridged. I am taking a brake right now from removeing the head. I just hope it's the head gasket and not a warped head.

Wish me luck, Dennis

Dennis,

Ouch!!! When I did my compression test last week because cylinder 1 is miss firing I got 130 psi across the board. I did get a false reading on #2 when I first tested and it only read 60 psi. I ran the test 3 more times just to see if I could get it to come back. I thought I had a connection between 1 & 2.

I'm looking at getting replacement wires now and hopefully I'll not need to get new coils again. They are $50.00 each from Autozone and Checker. www.kiaparts.com wants $55.00, but everyone will have to order them in.

Well, I found the cause of the problem, one of the heater hoses that goes to the tee under the intake on the head had a split in it. The damage is done so I'm thinking a stroker 2.2 or 2.3. My boy has a Probe 2.2 crank I just need to find affordable pistons. His custom Wiseco pistons were quite expensive. I may as well do the turbo also while I have have the engine out.

Yes it did but not for very long. When I was getting off the freeway it was just a little higher than normal but it has been doing that a little lately. The first stop light is only about a half mile and it was pegged at the light. I pulled over right away and got a tow the rest of the way to work.

Bummer!! If you decide to to the Cosworth vega pistons, check Venolia in Long Beach CA, less than $110 each.
