I have a 1989 dodge raider / montero the thing wont start. I've replaced the coil not the problem ,alternator is good . now i don't know if the power transistor that the coil connects to is good or how to test it right with an ohm's meter ,but then again will this cause the vehicle to not start . The coil also connects to a lc filter(which i don't know what that is) and a capacitor(Noise condensor -acording to the manual). I dont know if those 3 things would cause the vehicle from not starting . Any insight on this problem please let me know i've been test wires and messing with this thing for almost 5 or 6 months on and off thanks

Carb'ed or fuel injected?

You've verified you get spark at the end of the spark plug wires? If so, have you tried using starter fluid injected into the carb or throttle body to see if it will light off? If it does light off, I'd suspect a fuel pump problem.

Welcome to the board.

If you would give some information about your Raider we may be able to help you. What engine ect.

It sounds like a bad ECM if it's the V6. Open it up and see if any capacitors are leaking. Sticky stuff on the board.
Or better yet talk to Nick 239-849-0981 @ AV-Pro Company in Fort Myers Beach, Fl.and explain you problem. I sent my ECM to him $150 and one day service.
Do a search on CPM's or CPU's.

I have an 89 Raider with the 3.0 V6 that had much the same problem. The power unit is a transistor turned on by your ECU (computer). Pull the coil wire off the distributor cap and test for spark with a spark tester (got mine from Napa for not much money) if there is no spark at the coil, make sure the wires going to the ECU are intact and connected. The LC filter can cause a problem if they have shorted, but, you can by-pass them with the connectors in the wires leading to/from you coil and power unit. If the wires are intact and it's not the LC filter, you need to check your distributor for the proper signal. My distributor has an optical pick-up unit in it that sends a signal to your ECU telling it when to fire your power unit which makes the coil produce a spark at the right time. Good luck and just know that you are in for some wire tracing. There are alot of connectors that need to be checked in those wires. check them all for corrosion or broken wires.

sorry i didnt give any info about the engine size and ect but its the v6 3 liter.i did the old lift the coil wire slightly to the distributor ((as if doing the same were the car was running and you lifted the number 5 wire you would see spark if the plug wasn't shot)) and have someone turn the key to see if there is spark and there was none. Also the truck was weird i started it up ran it for a moment and it died first thing i assumed it was out of gas because the fuel gauge always reading full, so i got a gallon of gas and still nothing. I also replaced every fuel line on the the fuel tank , because ruffly 2 years ago the fuel pump assembly was rusted and finally the lines cracked so i replaced all the metal fuel lines with rubber.

I figure i split the rest up cause i like run on sentances im that guy the one sentance paragraph .So about the LC Filter i dont know how to test that and as well i maybe thought it might be the stator and dont know how to test that. It took me a while very long time years to finally find this an accurate full (besides the wire going off the distributor that ive found in there yet) Manual for this thing, I guess in japan the montero was also called the Pajero and i found a diagram for it heres the link if anyone needs better than a haynes manual cause all of us that owns raiders know that that can be quite frustrating but heres the link - Pajero/Montero/Raider Manual

Ok last post for now sorry. It has to be somthing simple i think but and ideas anyone has would be awsome. Now i had a friend pull me from my work place were the truck died back to my place and in the process for the hell of it i tried jump starting it (oh yeah its manual im an idiot and leave out details ha ) and in the process it started but died soon after - and i did give it gas but died even quicker. So anymore suggestions would be awsome and thank you and i hope some of you get a good use out of that manual , youll never need another and its accurate , and i guess the Pajero (RAider) is big in russia thats what the pdf files are off of
