Whoa there everybody, I just bought some 4.90's this year.
$275 for the rear set from the dealer
about $100 for the shim set, new bearings, and seals
the front set was almost $400 at the dealer so i bought the complete non CAD 8" axle housing w/ 4.90 from a '03 sport with 60k and probably never put in 4wd for $150

You can use the rear 4.88's out of the 92-93 Sr's its the 9" just like your gen 1 V6. The cheap ass 4.88's for the dana 44 are just that CHEAP ASS and will break.

I just bought a 92 SR for $300, a complete truck. It comes with 4.88s stock. All you have to do is shop around and you find all kinds of deals and gear ratio combos and you can get what you need for any project. The Mitsu 4.88s for a rear axle and the D44 4.88s in the front would be perfect. As long as your ratios front to rear are close you should be fine. You could also use manual hubs in the front for street driving and once in the dirt you would never know you had different ratios (as long as they are very close).

4.88s are fine in a D44, its the D30 4.88s you want to stay away from.

Please go read my posts in detail.

IF you want to buy a new set of 4.88's for a mitsubish axle, it will cost you more than a set of Dana 44 gears from Yukon.

My orig statement is that you could buy an ARB for your dana 44 for the cost that you could buy new gears for a mitsu axle.

There is no need to get all super sassy, and call my statements stupid, and if you continue to act this way towards myself, or anyone, I can fix that.

Seriously Curt, who buys new parts for our Mitsu trucks? We either pull from the yards or make our own <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Jeep = solid axles.
Mitsu = IFS.
Ouch!

Joking, my Montero is awsome. My Jeep goes more places. In my opinion they both have major draw backs. The D44 under jeeps are weak, the bronco and scout D30 are stronger. Thats sad. But for Monteros, there are plenty of Junkyards and random people who will sell whatever part you need for cheap. We may value those parts as gold....but they aren't really.

Good morning Cow-Girl!

This set of d44 are from an early bronco. They have 4.11s or 4.10s in them I dont recall. I could get the set cheap but I dont know what they look like inside that and I can not fabricate. The steer axle is rigged up with some disc brakes from a Suzuki sammy I believe. Tempting to buy them and hold onto them just incase I do get to that stage. The set for $200.

$200 isn't bad for the set. If you decide to buy you should first try and talk him down. And also before you buy spin the input to the axle and make sure the other parts move correctly. If anything you could pick them up, clean and paint and resell them for a few bucks more. I say, swap the front into your Gen1, rear gear the front, weld the spiders (make sure you have manual hubs) and go wheel! Most people have no clue what they are doing when they start their first swap.
