They are ball joints, no D44 ever had kingpins. The knuckles are interchangable with the newer style D44. The spindle pattern was different but because you can change knuckles you can also swap a newer spindle on. There is plenty of aftermarket support for this axle aswell. Those knuckles on that axle aren't flat top either. The only weak spot in that axle is the 19 spline outer shafts.
