To take out the entire assembly, you have to pull the front differential. To get just the outer off, cut the inner boot off. Then take a small blade flathead screwdriver and close to the outside there is a grove and ring in it. Use the screwdriver to remove the ring. Once that's out, the joint will slide out of the cup. All that's left is working it out of the spindle end. You may have to take the upper balljoint loose, but I don't remember. After it's all apart make sure you clean all the old grease out. Wipe out the cup and then spray some brake cleaner in there and let dry.

is the part that will come out the part that has the sline on the end?
on mine my jacked up hub wore away the end of the spline, so the groove the snap ring went in is no longer there, i had read about just using a dremmel and making a new groove but just didnt know how had it was to get out....do u have to cut the boot or can it just be taken off, i will need to re use it
from what u say sounds pretty easy to do

If you use a junkyard CV then as mentioned above you can just replace the part from the inner joint out. You can probably do this swap in a few hours or less. If you use an aftermarket CV it probably won't match up with the factory joint so you would have to replace the axle shaft from the diff outward. This is a MUCH more involved project than the first option, probably take you all day or more, and you will want help to handle the center axle housing.
Here is a quick description of the outer swap: 1) Remove the spindle (disconnect upper and lower balljoint and tie rod). 2) Remove the band that holds the inner joint boot to the "cup" that is on the diff bracket and pull back the boot from the cup. 3) Usually there is a snap ring of sorts inside the cup. Feel around the inside perimeter of the cup in the grease for a groove that will allow you to get a small screwdriver under the snap ring. Pry out the snap ring. 4) Pull the old CV axle out of the cup and off the vehicle. 5) Pull the junkyard axle apart at the inner joint the same way you just did the one on the vehicle. 6) Reassemble in reverse order using the "new" axle. The snap ring in the cup is optional. A zip tie will work for the boot band on the cup, or get the special band tool at the auto parts store.

If you are just replacing the outer components, you can follow the steps outlined in THIS article on the tech page. If you want/have to replace the entire CV axle, the front drivetrain disassembly steps are well outlined in THIS article. Either way, its just a matter of taking your time and follow the well mapped out process. Good luck!

I've searched through other posts on thi subject, your link seems the best. I am just curious...my boss has a 94 Passport and has offered to hire me to swap out old for new. Do the splined inner CV's pop out like on my Mitsubishi stuff and Honda's I've worked on? Or will the replacement units come needing to attach the boots to the inner shell?

To replace the entire axleshaft, you have to go through all of the steps in that thread because there is a c-clip on the inside of the differential bracket that holds things in place. If its just the outer portion of his axleshaft that needs replaced, you may get by with just replacing from the "guts" of the inner bell and out. The problem becomes that Isuzu used a couple of different sizes of inner bell and some of the aftermarket pieces are of an entirely different design.

The article discusses SOTF, I assume to be "shift on the fly"?? If so, then, the Passport is definitely so equipped. My boss may still have to visit a shop, this looks like quite a bit of work for a favor.
Thanks.
