So heres the skinny.
When going out of a parking stall, garage I can hear (well what would best be describe as a tink(metal sring poping against metal) sound)...This started within maybe the last month or so. Yestarday each time "Silver" is shifted into 1st and step on the gas I could hear a squeaky sound accompanied by this metal tink/clink sound. When going into reverse no squeaky sound just the tink/clink sound.

It almost sounds as if the rear brake drum springs ar clink. I also noticed that my rear brake safety parking handle is comming higher and higher up its axis.

What thoughts do you fellows have?

Most times that noise is a u-joint.. Could be shoes but check vigorusly the u-joints first.

Try greasing your u-joints also, while you're at it you could grease your front end; ball joints and such. If the noise is still there after that it would be something other than the u-joints. Visually check to make sure your u-joint caps are all in place properlly. Let us know what you find.

Thanx guys.

It's strange. I dont remember it doing this mid summer. It seems like it started later in the fall. In Oct. gave "Silver" the usuall pre for winter snow service (i.e. grease front end, rotate tires, change oil/filter and all general prep).
I'll check the U-joint. Not to sound like a boob, but what should I most be lokking 4 within checking?

Look to see if the caps are worn. Look to see if the seals are still in place, if not some of the bearings may be broke and worn. Look to see if the joint is loose. Look for damage such as rock rash, cracks, anything that doesn't look normal after wiping away any dirt. If you find any of the above you should replace that joint. Also check the straps and seats of the joints.

I tried to find a u-joint to take pics of so I could show you but I can't find them right now, buried.

The caps are the end of the joint, they fit on normally over needle bearings. The seals hold in grease and keep out dirt and are located between the cap and the body of the joint.

We went out to Wally tonight to do some quick shopping (approx. 13mi. round trip)and proceeded to return home.
1st thing we notice is the tink(clink)sound has now grown to a poping sound. The sound could best be described as when you intend to open a soad can but the tab slips.

So I got under the jeep with a work shop lite and checked the back U-Joints.....Nadda! zip! Zero! Nothing out of place and no signs of damage or distress.

Went to the front ones at the wheels, same thing.
Checked the front shaft to the diff...Other then a slight bit of grease noticebale at the seam where the caps go on, nothing!

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />When not in 4x4 the front shaft would'nt have trouqe applied too it, would it?(i.e. handle in jeep set for 2wd) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Even made sure to spray the rear brake cable assy. , plate, hardware between the rear floor hump. It looked pretty good.

Checked visualy and then physically for loose hardware to parts. Nadda!

It is only happening as stated before. At a stop light accelerate in 1st gear and I hear the pop. Reverse I hear the pop when shifting back too 1st. Only time it happens.

Now what? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Sorry for the novel.

We should start at cheap and usally first to fail items. Next I would check your fron hub assemblies, alot of times the bearings will fail. To check that you must jack up one front wheel. Grab the top and bottom of the tire firmly and rock the tire back and forth. If there is movement the bearing is bad. Do not rock it side to side because it will move due to the steering. You can also tell because when you drive the bearings will heat up but this heat is usually a sign after extreme damage.

C. did you by chance check your brakes? That maybe something to have looked at. Alot of shops will look for free also but if you do that ask them for a visual so you can see also. You can check the front pads on your own. Drums are a pain and I prefer not to deal with them. Let me know if you need help in checking brake items.
