87 4Runner 22re with power steering.
Charge and brake dash lights came on so I'm swapping in my spare alternator. Got the bolts out (lower long one gave me quite a fight). Is it possible to get this dang thing out through the bottom without taking more stuff apart? i've tried every orientation I think, and can't get it through...Top is no option at all.

lower radiator hose needs to be removed.
I have gotten it out before with out doing it.
but I have also caused a leak in the radiator.

It will come out the top. but it is like one of those puzzle things. got it out but could not get it back in.

make sure that it is bad. a few times I have pulled the connector out, oiled it up and put it back in and it worked.

now, I get it out by removing the steering shaft!!! but I cut the fender to get easy access to the steering box.

Yup, lower hose did it. A pain to have to drain the radiator just to pull the alternator. Thought I had gotten it out of my pickup w/ same engine back a while without removing that hose but I must be mistaken.
I did check the connector and it seemed not to be the problem. Have to pick up a brush set and have the pulled one ready to go when I need it...
wow, with that cut fender it's a snap.
Thanks guys.

Quite the trim job there MoMan!

If you don't have PS on the truck, then it's not a big deal. When I picked up my '83, the PO had removed the torque rod bolt and didn't put the dayem thing back in; I figured, for this chore. Managed to find one off an old frame before it left my friend's place.

To get it out the top I had to remove the radiator shroud, and fan. Had mine go out on the base, so no option of removing the radiator hose.

Thanks Buck. I will try that next time. I will be happy to take off the shroud and fan to not have to drain the radiator. The plastic drain plug on my rad is a course sloppy thread and the stream coming out is all over h**l...makes a da*m mess in the garage...don't want my animals to find any to lick up either.

ok. i'll have to do take off my alternator tomorrow with my 91 22re. (w/ power steering)

What's the consensus for easiest/fastest R&R?

-Trim fender & remove steering shaft

-Rubic's cube from the top

-Rubic's cube from the bottom

-Undo fan & shoud

-Drain & remove lower rad hose

Note: I have a dog in the backyard & it's FREEZING out...-5 degree celcius...buurrrrr....

It's easy on a 91.
Step 1: Remove truck.
Step 2: Rebuild Alternator
Step 3: Reinstall truck. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />
