I want to confirm weather or not the 3.0 DOHC and 3.5 DOHC heads are interchangeable.

Ok....... lil bit of a threadjack but...... hopeufly Justice will forgive me

So what about the SOHC 3.0 like whats in my Mighty Max???? I guess I misread this when I saw it the first time or is there any head upgrade for that motor?

The water crossover pipe is what concerns me a little. But The Diamante DOHCs are plentifull in the yards here and easier to find than a DOHC Montero. Also are the left and right banks interchangable on the DOHC engines? Since I'm lazy, It would be easier to pull two different front heads off two seperate cars maybe not the best idea, but a thought...

Not at all, you'd have the ports backwards...

pull two 'front' heats and you'll have two passenger side heads which would put the exhaust ports on the inside on the driverside... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Not if you can turn the head 180 and flip the cams over like you can on the 12V 3.0, which is why I asked the question. But with the water crossover pipe this is probably not the case with the 24V DOHC heads.

All variants of the mitsu 6G72 12V 3.0 heads are all pretty much the same but there are some variants in the cams, cam sprockets, and valve cover bolt boss. But there is no bolt on upgraded 12V head that I'm aware of.

Correct - and AFAIK, there's no "bolt-on" anything for the 3.0L 12v SOHC engine that will make more power. There are a couple of header sets manufactured, but I doubt much gain would be realized from them - maybe a little.

If you want to spend a day with a die grinder, the heads can be ported and gasket matched to the manifolds which might help a little. I've done that to mine, but I don't know if it does much more than makes me feel like I did something to "make it better".

I'm going to check tomorrow on a set of 3kGT twin turbo heads, if swapped how you've explained, the heads externally look like they'll work, but im going to have to check out the cam situation.

I'll post info as i find out, unless you've actually done this or have a set of DOHC heads.

I've placed a set of DOHC heads side-by-side and compared them to SOHC heads..... same with DOHC/SOHC blocks. You'll find that the DOHC heads will bolt on, but there is a small cooling water passage between the exhaust valves on the DOHC heads that is fed from the DOHC block. The SOHC block does not provide the supply for that passage.

The sohc heads are entirely reversible, in my experience with
4 or 5 motors... the CAS/dizzy mount's bolt- on,
and all the bosses have been drilled.
Even on various Chrysler products

93+ 3000GT/Stealth heads are interchangeable with SR heads. They are identical and can be swapped from side to side (just spin them 180 degrees and swap locations for the coolant block off plate). The castings are the same and so are all of the mounting holes.
