I would love for someone to figure out how to do a tailgate for me! Get the hinges and locking mechanism from a pickup and adapt it to the door and door frame. You'd probably have to do some cutting and welding, but I don't see why it couldn't be done if you want it bad enough. Frank

Right. I was thinking more aloing the lines of someone blazing the trail and offering up a wrench-rating on difficulty.
The part that gets me a little jammed up is when I think about how the lower right of the door is clipped, and then how to get the hinges low enough to have it work like a real tailgate.
Then again, it might be more work that it's worth in that the spare will need a swing-out mount to be fabbed as well.

I was thinking of using the latches from an old toyota box. Personaly I love the old school kind of stuff and it would be easier I think. I guess I will pull it off again and see what can be done. I dont have a rear bumper so at least its not in the way. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> I think to get it to work properly I may have to split the gate at the bottom. And of coarse convince Jenssen to let me back into the shop this weekend. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Well buddy, I will weigh in here, but you've already decided anyways so... You need to make it a drop down. "Why?", you ask. Well, because you've shortened the bed (or rather created such a short bed) you may have occasion where you need to carry something slightly longer, and thus dropping the newfangled tailgate allows you to extend the bed. That's why. PLUS, the aforementioned spare rack thingy, which necessitates a rear bumper to hang it on. Which means of course you will finally have to put a bumper on there that you can't tear off in one outing (I've already given him two bumpers - one came with the truck, and one came after. He quickly reduced both to twisted, gnarled hunks of metal. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> Maybe it was the chrome that offended him? But I digress...). <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> But. You may not wanna go in the shop tomorrow, since Maury is coming up to see BetsyIV, and if all goes well this eve, you'll come with him in Betsy III to see Betsy V. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I just got back from Yellowknife tonight. Needed a vacation and spent a bunch of time helping a buddy build his samurai. Also went sledding for the first time. I may have found a new winter sport. Anyways back to the truck. I'll try to get some pics of it tomorrow after work. Lots left to do and I'm sick as a dog. But I may change it more. I'm not totally happy with how it turned out.
