I see 2 or 3 places to mount a cup holder. Dash left or right and the blank next to th e$x$ leaver.... Anyone have a brilliant idea? I'm tired of living in fear for the safety of my clean carpet.... And No, I won't quit drinking coffee on the road.

I just use the compartment at the rear of the center console as a cupholder. I took the lid of that compartment off several years ago for that purpose. Works great on all drinks, big and small. It holds a drink nice and secure even when I'm bouncing around on the trail.

I modified one of those cup/cd/tape holders that are available at most car parts isles at Walmart/Target/etc to fit in the tunnel between the front and rear seats and screwed it in place! I used a grey one which matches my grey interior close enough to look like it's supposed to be there. I can take pics if you're interested.

In a gen1 (and somehow, in everything else I drive), I use an old QuikTrip 34oz biggulp drink holder that was made with a biggulp wide x approx3" deep flange on one side to slip into the gap between seat cushion and seat back, with a 1/4"lip on the end of the flange. Flange makes more than a 90* angle by 10* or so to tilt the holer on the flange to "match" the seat cushion slope. In the gen1, I whango'ed the flange into the gap between the dash center lower console and the shifter. The flange broke off the holder years ago from the leverage a full cup of 34oz of Kona put on the plastic, but a sheet of 1/8"plwood fixed that.
In the gen2, the cupholder goes with the flange under the edge of the front seat, cup under/to the right of right knee. Not ideal.

I'd like to see that.

Auto or stick? My a/t and all the interior trim pieces came from an '89. I have a small flat tray area left of the t/case lever. In that I attached a SpillMaster Junior. The thing is tiny, adjustable, and very secure! I've used them for years in different cars. I even had one screwed directly into the top of the "tunnel" on a VW rabbit, and it would hold a big gulp size through an autocross course! It's always kind of amazed me, since it is very short. But, it does the job with even really tall cups. web page Available at wallyworld, pepboys, CSK, etc. Cheap and adjusts easily with one finger.

Russell, is that a Ram mount for your notebook?
I can't go quite so high tech as you did, although I am thinking about 'decking' my rear to put a drawer under the floor to stow tools. I do still have to take the kids and wife in my almost-toy truck.
