To get into the top of the transfer you need to get the center console out first. Then dig down to find a metal cover plate that the transfer shifter comes up from. I expect you may need to get the transmission shifter out of the way.
Once you lift the cover around the shifter you will find the top of the transfer case with a 4 bolt mount for the shifter.
Clean around that and remove it. The upper part of the shift rails will be in view.
