What's the scoop on toy solid axles? Good, bad, total junk? I'm pretty sure they are a passenger drop, but that can be gotten around. Posted on a couple of toy boards and got instantly flamed for mentioning toy and mitsu in the same sentence, bout as bad as the jeep guys <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

To the best of my knowledge only a small diff front axle was in country here other than the early FJ stuff.

The Aussie version of the FJ60 (+) came equipped with full-floating rear axles and high-pinion front diffs. The ring gear and diff are similar to the Ford 9" with drop outs. With the exception of the Birfield joints, these axles appear regularly on crawlers in my area, often with 35-37" tires. Since the front axle is all plate steel and tubing, it is feasible to just swap the necessary pieces around for a driver's side drop. I've read articles that indicate overall component strength is approx. Dana 44-50 equivalent. I think they'd be good source axles for the Monty, even can sport Aisin hubs!! The Pirate write-up probably covers these bases more in-depth. The secret to posting there is "Dodge Raider"...:o

I hang aroud the Toy shops here because that's the closest I can get to a Mitsu shop.:-)

As I understand things the only problamatic part is the Birfields. Rock Stomper ran them for years with 37s and larger. Far as I know the ONLY thing he ever broke were the joints. Last axle I saw was using Porsche joints; they still broke.

The current 'trend' is to transplant D60 knuckles and re-do the axles shafts to fit. It's not hard or expensive. Basically you get a Ford 9" with Dana 60 knuckles when you're done strength wise. I've seen a couple done in the last few months.

Honestly? It's a waste of time. It's still cheaper to build a D44/D60 or a Ford 9" than to try and make a Toy or Mitsu axle do the same thing. It's kinda like trying to turn a Mitsu IFS carrier into a solid axle...why???

one up everybody with hybrid mitsu 9.5" with a front dana 60 and end up with sonthing cheaper and tougher than those ford 9" dana 60 combos.
This is what i've been looking into, and currie can make the shafts for this setup. Actually if you have the money you can send the 9.5" rear diff housing and they'll build the rest around that to fit your truck.

Im SASin my 86 truck w/ a yoter SFA and Ive read up on em purdy well and yes the birfeilds are the weak points on those axles but granted these yoters have CRAZY ass aftermarket options available example you can buy chrome moly birfs or a D44 knuckle conversion kit for the axle and if you can find the last year of the yoter SFA (85 i think) they are gusseted all to hell compared to the first years there just a bare axle granted you can buy the gussets

Flipping a toy axle is pretty easy as far as I can tell. You can bolt the pumkin in upside down basically. The front of the diff has to be modified for the ring gears. And the nuckle balls need to stay on the same sides so you have to remove and reweld them. Also trussing, gears, axles and other parts are quite cheap in comparison for me being Canada. They sell 30 spline chromo shafts for the front. Very very strong, but can still be broken with a stupid wheeling style.
