Dunno where you herd that at, but no not really.
BobShaw is the only one I know of that put a yota axle in his truck.

DIY cheap swap is the montero sport locked diff, or weld your diff up.

Body Damage is Cool
Just a bit of advice in case you do decide to weld it up. Do not remove the thrust block in the center of all the spider gears. Not being to much of a welder, i had a shop do mine and they decided to remove my thrust block, at the time i didn't know it's purpose, but it caused a axle shaft to blow apart, no fun at all.

well i recommend buying a sport rear end for 200-300 dollar range this will get you an air locker, stronger axle and in most cases disc brakes. It's a simple swap, but if you want to be a cheap ass, you can send me a bare diff (no ring gear) and i'll weld it up for you. Like PA_JERO said don't forget the thrust block.

I'd go with the locked diff option if you drove it on the street.. I drove Bob Shaw's truck with the Detriot locker in it.. it felt real funny driving on the road and punching the gas with the 4.3 making it lock the rear end (lack of sway bars would do that too)

Yeah man, so what kind of wheeling you doing with your truck anyway? LSD rears work pretty well ya know?
