I have to ask this-- is anyone being asked for their name for store ammo purchases?
I was at AAFES (Bx/Px) last week, and was asked for my name when buying ammo. My name showed up on my sales receipt. Two weeks ago, this was not the case when I bought ammo. Called a couple stores in town; nope, they don't do this.
I asked the Q. to AAFES online about when this policy came down, and from where. Got a letter from the local AAFES manager, said it came down from HQ AFEES. This answer was prompt, but quite insufficient. Am pursuing farther, and have notified some of my local vet pals about this.
I can only spectate that AAFES customers are a pretty good control group, as only military, retirees, and dependents who are eligible card holders can shop here.
Hmmmmm.....

I get asked to show ID only for proof of age (although, common sense would dictate that I am of age to buy ammo), but if I pay cash, nothing gets punched into the machine identifying me.

Yep, no prob on the proof of age deal. I also paid cash, as I usually do with this kind of merchandise.

If this a government sponsored store specificly for military or military related people and not open to the general public, I guess I would be less concerned than if all public stores started doing this. Especially if it was some kind of new Federal law or something.
But don't they have to take down your name and verify your military ID just to shop there anyway?
Don't get me wrong. I definately share your concern and its strange being a new policy, but if you're going to buy directly from the government at a store that specificly caters to military people, you gotta expect a bit less privacy than if you were visiting the local wal-mart.
That all said, it does sound like the plan is to go after the ammo first and not the guns. Things like taxes, registrations and tracking systems on brand new ammo and banning the sell and ownership of old ammo and self loading.

No. Verify your ID for privilege to shop there, but don't take your name...ever (well, until now apparently). ...if you're going to buy directly from the government at a store that specificly caters to military people...
not quite. This is a private agency allowed to set up shop on military bases with exclusive privilege to sell to military members. Percentages of profits are kicked back to base community through morale, welfare and recreation organizations. The govt has nothing to do with it besides owning the land on which the store sits. But, that's not the REAL point of the conversation, so I digress. Just wanted to ensure our details are straight. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

This month I've picked up a couple hundred 12 gauge shells from wal-mart and Gander Mountain and just had to show ID for age.

No, they do NOT take down your name for ANY purchase, other than firearms (fed compliant).
You are required to present a military/dependent ID when making your purchase, or if they are spot-checking at the entrance (periodic requirement), or both.
As mentioned, I've been buying ammo over the counter pretty regularly, and the last time I bought ammo was only 2 weeks ago.
I've elevated my Q. for them tho'.
