Well, I finally had a chance to check the situation out myself. It turns out that the slot for the snap ring on the end of the axles was ground off. For now, we were able to put the auto hubs back on and secure them with some shims and a bolt in the end of the axle. This should be far more solid than the little factory snap ring setup. If and when the axles get replaced, we will put the manual hubs on. We may still cut a new slot in the existing axles as well to make the hubs work without replacing the axles.
