Blinking wheel indicator on dash? (Gen 2) #923202 01/02/09 03:32 AM

On my daily driver 95SR, I get a strange response when I put it in 4Hi. when I put the lever into 4Hi from 2Hi, the front wheels on the dash diagram start to blink sporadically. The rear lights do nothing, but I suspect their bulbs are burned out. I have never actually seen this diagram work right, which I presume would mean that the lights come on solid and not blinking. Then again, I've never had it truly off road before.

So my question is this- if the lever is in the 4Hi position, am I actually in 4Hi regardless of what the indicator says, or am I waiting for some sort of clutch to engage? Can I safely ignore the indicator and assume that I'm in 4Hi?

Sorry for my n00bness. I don't drive this vehicle much and previously I've assumed that I was in fact in 4Hi when it is plausible that I was not.

I drove a Gen II yesterday for the first time. The front blinking lights would seem to indicate that 4wd has been selected but not engaged yet by driving forward or backward. My reasoning is that the front wheel lights would not blink while driving.

Hmm- I followed the instructions on the visor to shift the lever "at 62mph or less while the gas pedal is being slackened"- so I was in motion when I selected 4Hi. Is it possible for the car to be in motion with the level in the 4Hi position but not actually be engaged in 4Hi?

If those lights are blinking and you have to ask (i.e. you don't feel any handling/performance difference) then you are NOT in 4wd.

The front axles in a gen II are engaged/disengaged at the differential by a vacuum actuated system. If the system is working correctly, then the lights only blink when (a) you have selected 4wd but the front axles haven't yet engaged, or (b) you have gone from 4wd to 2wd but the front axles haven't disengaged yet. When you are actually in 4wd the front wheels should be lit solid.

There are electrical, mechanical, and vacuum components to this system, and any one of them not working could keep your front axles from engaging. Here's a good article on another sight that someone else has linked to this board in the past. It helped me understand my GenII and it should help you trouble shoot yours: Flashing Light Fix

Hope that helps. Good Luck!

mine used to flash due to a stuck t-case switch, no big deal, i just removed the stupid light. I know when my trucks in 4x4, i dont need a dummy light. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
