I will use a huge bolt cause I want the weld to be lasting and my welding on small stuff is ugly...most times.

But an ugly weld is usually not a strong weld. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />

jim...have you considered a 2" reciever mounted salt spreader? it's snowing here now. you prolly don't see to much snow and ice removal tools there huh.

your plan with the bolt should keep the rattling to a minimum.

this article shows some additional bracketry to the frame for carying heavy stuff and a spring loaded "t" handle latch.

wish i had my old favorites list. i researched this stuff years ago. never built one tho. couple guys had machined a bearing race bracket for a trailer axle stub shaft. looked like the best hinge to me at the time.

Salt spreader? Is that some sort of lost language? We only speak TEXAN down here..
What I have had in mind is sort of overkill, but I LIKE overkill!
I have used, and prolly still have a few of these type hinges in the shop. In fact I'm so sure I havn't even bothered to look for one of them.
Here is a photo of a similiar brand from the net.

What I'm thinking bout is using a 1/4X3X2" rear bumper with 1/2 of the hinge welded to the passanger END of the bumper.
Then fabricating the swinging part with the other 1/2 of the hinge welded bout 3/8" below the bottom of the swinging bar. I figure the 3/8 will allow for any inconsistancy in the installation. Once I have layed it out on the table I may find that there is no reason to have that 3/8 in there and might leave it out all together.
Then on the other end of the bar a 1/2' plate welded to the Jeep side of the bar with a threaded hole in it to correspond with a hole on the swinging bar. A 5/8 bolt will serve as the latch..
Still planning but that is where I am now.
Hell! I don't even have the Jeep... It is still at the ranch.

That is one heck of a hinge there BJ! 11 lbs. each huh!? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Looks like that should hold about any spare and equipment you might want to mount on a swing-away. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Where did you find those at?

Local farm store has em. I googled "weld gate hinge" and came up with the photo. I think the ones I have weigh a bit less than the 11 pounds of the one in the photo.
I have used them in the past on weighty iron gates that I make for lectric openers.
That beast has a 1-1/4" hinge pin in it...I'm thinking it'd be bullet proof for sure.
