Go for the 4.7 V8. You get a peppy small V8 for not so much $$$ and a 5 speed progamable Auto. The radiator isn't a problem and it won't twist your little XJ. I've seen a wrangler with a 4.7 and it cought on since then at least 2 I know of are going the same way and one is going for the Kenne Bell blower setup. And you won't be strayin' off the bloodline, JEEP all the way.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Quote
No way on a 5.9 I6 diesel in XJ, gotta see pix to believe that one. I've personally seen a 454 in a xj. When I talked with the owner, he said in order to get a huge radiator in, he had to move the firewall 9" back. The bay got widened 6"
it has coil overs.
Now a 4BT 4cyl cummins in a xj is possible, 5.9 no way.

The XJ is a pile when it comes to strength, there is nothing strong about them. Until I beefed my with frame stiffeners and intigrated sliders, if you twisted it up the door would not open.
Please don't compare a rig with a frame (even an old CJ) to a unibody. That is a joke.

Hey buddy, I read your post earlier, looked up the dude that owns the MJ @ a local bar(lol) and I am a wrong! He says it is a 4BTA platform. I have never even thought of the smaller cummins but I had thought about nissan diesels out of scouts and stuff. sorry for being wrong, in guess sometimes you find out you don't know what your talkin about! well what can you look for that might have a 4BT cummins in it. What tranny and t-case and all that jazz???

i wish i would hurry up and get this project done so i can mess with the Trailduster. I am excited about that one. It's already lifted 6 inches. The uh previous owner used it as a john boat and filled the engine with gravel and creek water. He drove it home, changed the oil and drove it to me when I traded. One of my friends called and tells me , this dude has 3 440s for $500 have to take them all. He swore they were all running when they were pulled "this year" we'll see right. Ya, I bought em, I was surprised to find more than one in the state. I haven't been able to find one for a long time. That wasn't crazy built with a price tag anyway.

No worries BTB, thanks.

I thought I'd seen it all with that 454 XJ.
A 4BT make much more sense.

In the denver area, delivery fleets were (2-3 years ago)
parting out Frito trucks and such, those all have 4BT engines.

The little cummins will still torque the XJ Uni to heck, but it could work.

$500 dollars for one 440 that DOSN'T run is good much less than 3. A cool prodject would have been to drop the 440 in the trailblazer and drop the XJ body on it, but then you loose the convertable capabilities....well unless you go find a older 2 door cherokee and make that where you can remove the top.AHHHHH the possibilities.

thats what i said! i almost bought one at a scrapyard last year for $800 that had over 200k on the dumptruck it came out of and he said it knocked like a jackass in a tin barn.. so needless to say i just bought 3 440s ha... yeah the possibilities are endless and I thought i had pretty much thought of them all. get on here and find a bunch of guys like me.. my wife gives me ***** for what i do everyday, i sit on the toilet pull out a couple magazines and write out "build plans" for all kinds of *****. but it's cool though, I can look back at the ones a did a couple of years ago and say damn thats a hell of an idea. lol thought i'd share..
