Hi. I'm puzzled by the references to AWD. My 91 SWB only has 4hi, 4 hi centerlock and 4 low. Is 4hi the AWD you guys are referring to? Yes it is.

4hi is 4wheel drive, but without the center diff locked, so the front and rear wheels are able to spin independently of each other, like AWD cars such as Subaru's, etc. This means you can drive it on pavement without the driveline binding, like it would in locked 4wd.
I use the term AWD to differentiate (pun intended ) between 4HI, and 4HLC.

Cheers bud. I tend to foster confusion wherever I go, so don't worry. Just ask my students!
Roads were worse today. The plow/sander was doing 40kmh (in a 100kmh zone) so I passed him, on my last stretch of tarmac before I turned onto the gravel (about a 10km stretch). Drifts everywhere, and ice underneath.
Never thought I'd say it, but the LWB was a bit of a relief. This is a good year to have real snow tires on.
Then I had to go to a meeting over in Redbull's neck of the woods (about another 150kms from my school). More of the same - icy roads, covered in snow. Wow, am I ever looking forward to spring!

Similar experience today- temp at -30 - black ice everywhere. As per the radio over 75 accidents in the Ottawa area before 9am . Went down one 4km stretch that had 6 accidents site- in one case a Ford Focus was perched on top of a 1 meter high snowpile with his rear end dangling over the road & no visible damage - no idea how he got there (4 others scattered helter skelter nearby). It was like seeing a bunch of spun out and dented police cars in a Smokey the Bandit movie car chase. The paj just hummed along.... no need for brakes, just foot off the gas and let the engine do the rest . Noticed the accidented cars were pretty much all Ontario plated cars - Quebec has a mandatory winter tire law.
