Justice is correct. Ray, you need 490s: that's what the bigger gear is. 488s were only with the 3.0s and the 2.5TDi's. Not trying to split hairs here, there would really be negligible difference, but the bigger gears are 490s, so if you get 488s, they'll be the smaller ones.

BTW, were 490s ever offered in North American genIIs? I'd love to score a rear r&p for cheap - would make swapping in a locker like Reuben's with different gears much easier...swap the gears while my factory 490s stay in the open third...

Yea, but those most likely have the small diff (92-93). Ray needs the big gears (94+ 3.5) Aren't the p/n's in the p/n repository for the larger diffed gen II SR's?

They fit yes, but they came in the 3.5 Montero sport. Not the 3.5 SR, which came with 4.6 untill 97 at which time Mitsu switched to the 4.2's and the SOHC engine.
My comment was directed to Russel who said you could get them out of gen2's in the PnP...which only came in 4.88 with the 92-93 small diffs. So thts not an option.
Hope this clears it up for you a bit. The big 4.90's are out of the sport.

OK but that number is for the right gear right? I'd hate to order the wrong part.
Also I accidentally typed in Mitsubishiparts.com instead of .net and it's only $466.11 there!
Any other cheaper sources I should know about?

Justice,
One of the local yards has had two Sports in the last year, both had the 4.9s, one was a 3.5L auto, the other a 3L stick. Yes, I have seen the 4.875s in earlier Gen IIs. I was just throwing out that I'd seen these parts in the yards.

Ray,
Gen IIs with 4.9s appear somewhat regularly at Pick-n-Pull.
Russell You originally said gen II's (not sports). which is why I put my 2 cents in FWIW. Ray, I would confirm those pt numbers with Carlos or Angelo or perhaps scotty/Toasty..I think those guys are all running them.

R- So to clarify are the 01+ 3.5L sport's front and rear 4.9 R&P gears the ones I want to buy for my 96SR? Also, I assume these parts would be pretty hard to damage (unless via an accident) and should be ok to buy used right? Ray, I would confirm those pt numbers with Carlos or Angelo or perhaps scotty/Toasty..I think those guys are all running them. Will do!

Yes, buy the complete front housing out of the sport, and swap it in. This will elimiinate the CAD and give you an excuse to get some manual hubs. When i got my sport front diff, i opened it up to install my locker and it was so clean i don't think that truck was ever put into 4wd. I bought my rear set new I used my friends '04 sport vin at the dealer to confirm the part # i got on here.
