Getting the Wheeling Fever
What up fellah's!! Haven't been in here in a while. Have a question for all. I have a 1985 Mitsubishi Monty, I have a rebuilt engine which has about 3500 miles. I also have a rebuilt carb. I have noticed that i have white smoke and black shot gun splatter when i start the truck. It doesnt smoke when im driving. Only when it sits while running or when i push to much on the excelerator when im switching from 1st to 2nd gear. They say that rings need to set or something like that. The person who rebuilt my engine said to dont bother until I have 5,000 miles. I do baby her i hardly drive the freeway, I just drive to the lake on back
roads.

Body Damage is Cool
I don't know but mechanics they all have their own theories. I had my engine rebuilt and never experienced what you are describing. But hey, with mechanical stuff anything can happen.

Does the smoke has a distinctive smell? like a sweet candy like smell? if it does then it might be antifreeze. Have you notice any changes in your temperature? do you have a thermostat installed? My question is based in that if you have problems with the head gasket and since you don't have a thermostat you might not notice a big change in the temp. Also, have you checked the oil? have you changed the oil after the first 500 - 600 miles?

Sorry for all the questions but they might come handy in trying to isolate your concerns.

Hope is nothing serious.

Ive changed the oil @ least 6 times. The vehicle runs cool all the time. The oil smells like gas. Hey the more questions the better.

If it's running cool all the time, then it sounds like you have no thermostat in there. I would get one in there. It's not good to be driving around with an engine running too cold all the time.

Oil smells like gas? You have a carb problem. Does the exhaust smell gassy, too?

yep, it smell like gas all the time, i just got the carb rebuild and passed emissions. Could the engine smell like that because it ran rich for a while. Or do you think my rings were bad from the get go or is some pump bad?

You need to quit guessing. Have a local mechanic you trust look it over and run a compression test and see if the carb is running rich. That way you have something to take to the rebuilder if the engine is shot.
