If the smell came with the high revs and doesn't happen now... I'm pretty certain it would have been the clutch. high revs won't hurt that engine... But using the clutch while high-reving will cause great friction...which in turn will emit the burning smell. If you have already burnt one clutch out it would NOT surprise me to hear you are working on the second clutch.. One is either taught how to use a clutch properly or improperly!!! If a clutch is improperly used it is going away pretty quick.. If it is properly used it will last the life of the rest of the engine parts.
Maybe you should stick them cute little #6's under the front of the kitchen stove and leave the offroading to others... Big Jim

Well, Big Jim, it's a good thing I went to church this morning or I might be writing something you wouldn't want to read! I'll ignore the kitchen stove comment. Yes, I did ruin a perfectly good clutch when I was 15. All my fault, the teacher was a good teacher, I was just a real slow learner. But once I learned I never forgot! Never hurt another vehicle. It wasn't I who was driving when the burning smell happened. I still think it wasn't the clutch.

The other thing the smell might be is from MUD or Grass or small LIMBS or other material clinging to the exhaust system. That system is hot enough to cause dry grass to light and start fires.. Many times something will jump up and get hot enough to char or smolder causing an unusual smell for a while. Might even be there for a few weeks.. causing the smell off and on again. My wife ran slap over the top of a goat once.. the innards of the goat wrapped themselves around her exhaust system.. she had to live with a smell for a week or so.
After church did you spend the proper amount of time in the kitchen? I'd hate to see you lose site of your god-given place. Big Jim

I checked - no goat innards, luckily. That smell really bothered me, so I am taking it in to the shop. Yes, plenty of time in the kitchen. I'm a fantastic cook. So much talent, so little time.

Is the smell still there? I would wait a bit to see if it goes away before taking it to the shop, as long as it is driving normally...they could tell you it is something that it is not, and you will be chrarged for something that did not need to be replaced.

Well hey, Brown! No, the smell is not still there and it drives fine. It lasted only a few minutes. However, the "check engine" light came on right after that, and when I took the Jeep through emissions just a few days later, it failed because that light was on and the test they do under the dashboard (no hookup to the exhaust) showed a problem with the oxygen. So I think that 1) there is a cause and effect connection here somehow, and 2) I have to take it in to have it repaired to pass emissions. Unless someone knows otherwise and can talk it through so that I can understand it (but slowly, and then I'll go fry some chicken while I think about it).

After you do the dishes and clean up the kitchen, go out and look at the OX wires to see if they are burnt up or otherwise damaged and not doing their job. Replacing an ox sensor ain't much of a job and doing it yourself is a whole lot cheaper than having it profesionally done. Big JIm

You're pretty funny, Big Jim. Like I would even KNOW what an ox sensor would look like?? I'm still trying to figure out what the cute #6's are.

Did they even run the emissions test with the light on? If so they wasted your time...they should have noticed the light immediately and said they could not pass you with the light on. An oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust system, some vehicles have two of them. Once you find it or them, just go to your local parts store and tell them what year make a and model vehicle, and tell them you need 1 or 2 O2 sensors. And you will also need an o2 sensor socket. Here is a link that will point you in the right direction. It is not a Jeep, but will give you a better idea on things. replacing an OX sensorAnd another thing...if the Check Engine light ever comes on, Auto Zone will scan for codes for free. Better than having the emissions place do it...hopefully you can get it fixed soon enough so you don't have to pay for the dang inspection twice.
