Have a clutch adjustment question. All of my clutch action seems to be in the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the pedal or I suppose last 1/3 to 1/2 depending on how you look at it. When taking off in gear I have to let the pedal out half way before I get any engagement. Almost seems like the slave cylinder is pushing out too far. Is there a way to adjust this? Going to go crack open the slave bleed valve and see if the slave cylinder retracts any.

there is only a "pedal height" adjustment .

1980 was the last year of an adjustable clutch .

cracked open the bleed valve and the slave didn't retract any, so looks like it dosn't have any residual pressure pushing the throwout up against the pressure plate. Guess that's just the way it's gonna be, works fine, just don't want it wearing out the clutch any faster than normal.

The FSM has a procedure for adjusting the clutch pedal itself. I need to do that as well as I am experiencing similar symptoms myself.

Also check the pedal bracket to make sure it isn't failing. We're starting to see more of these on the 1st and 2nd gen trucks.

When I changed my master cylinder, the pedal first released really close to the floor, then I got it to release all the way at the top, then just right. You can adjust the rod which connects to the actual clutch pedal and goes into the master cylinder. I'll bet the links that were posted describe the proceedure. You can move the nut back & forward, as well as screw the actual rod farther in or out of the cylinder. If that doesn't help...clutch.

The two adjustments are pedal height and free play (push rod). Using those two, you can change a lot of how and where the pedal engages and disengages the clutch.

As mentioned earlier, the factory manuals have very good descriptions for the adjustments, and you can modify the factory suggestions for your own preference.

Thanks for the Link to the FSM, a whole lot more info there about adjusting the clutch than my Haynes manual. Gonna read over it and mess with it tonight I think.

Adjusted things as much as I could. I have some play at the beginning of the pedal now, but all of the clutch is still at the beginning of the stroke. I didn't check, but I wonder if the Marlin pressure plate's "fingers" stick out further than stock making the clutch engage sooner. Also I discovered that the new master cylinder I put in the threaded portion of the rod is at least a half inch longer than the one I replaced, so I had to move the pedal position screw almost all the way out so I could have a little bit of play prior to the clutch engaging. Anyways, like I said before, it works fine, just different. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
