Body Damage is Cool
Funny how the local news blows things out of porportion.
I felt a little dizzy in the shower at 5:27. The dog was running around the bed barking. Cat didn't even wake up.

That my friends was about the extent of the "great quake of 2009". Don't believe the hype, it was really nothing at all.

Of course by 6AM it was headline news and every yahoo wih a cell phone was calling in to describe their traumatic experience.
Didn't even spill my Kona coffee filled to the brim sitting on the bathroom counter.

A dj on the local rock station was claiming that the Seattle earthquake and the Mt. Redoubt volcanic activity in Alaska were linked. I called to shut him down. Welcome to the remains of the Farallon Plate subduction under NA.

the fault line in the pnw is so deep that the oblivious people that live there dont notice the several large scale quakes that occur there every year. not like socal, when if the fault hiccups... you feel it. the line is part of the ring of fire that pretty much defines the pacific. hell, i learned that in 6th grade pnw history... if your from there you should remember the segway from how the makahs like to hunt whales to how one day the oly penn will one day be an island with port angeles being its capital. and when that happens, the beautifull view that my gramma has out of here picture window of mountain rainier will all be ruined.

I was sitting at my home desk in Mt. Vernon when it struck and I didn't notice anything at all. Perhaps that comes from having spent my childhood in Tehachapi, CA, where earthquakes were a regular occurence in the 50s.

Only a 4.6? I get those all the time in the form of little rollers near my place.

The little ones keep the BIG ones from happening. Mt. Redoubt is N/A-- different subluxtion.

Exactly!
News anchors here just love to get people all spooled up and make headline news out of anything and everything.

McCord AFB is moving planes out of AK and bringing them down to WA for safe keeping until that mountian of yours calms down though!

When I lived up in WA I had a ham radio & laptop setup at home for APRS. Simple explanation of APRS is GPS data packets over the air. Anyway, somebody had configured a station to send out a packet from Mount St. Helens every time it made a significant peep. There would be dozens in a day, ranging from little 1.x up to stuff in the 3s and 4s. Pretty neat to watch.

The average person has no idea how much seismic activity there is all around them and is easily alarmed. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it until multiple Ph.D. geo-geeks start getting on the news and telling everyone to panic. Like up in Alaska right now.

Redoubt is in condition orange right now; upper glacier is starting to slush.

AK Volcano Observatory webcam

Redoubt has 2 webcams; see left sidebar.

Nobody up here north of the Alaska Range is upset, unless they've got a plane trip scheduled to the '48.

Jets must be goin' down from Elmendorf to McChord.
