That's good to know. Not really all that scary, but ABSOLUTELY something to be aware of. I had no idea...You dive in the bay, Les?:

I dive in the bay all the time, divers are on the bottom, GW always attack up . Done with school, got my piece of paper

Don't worry about the sharks, eight years in the bay and I've never seen a shark. I have to dive in the Aquarium to get my shark fix.

NICE! What did you get your degree in? I can't remember...

I'll be studying Operations Analysis at NPS. Time will be busy but well worth it in the end.

Are you still planning on moving away from Monterey no that school's over?

If you want to do a run at some point, I'd be interested in doing the one you wrote about before. Death Valley, wasn't it? I've been itching to make it out to Hollister since Joanna, Ray, Russ and Co keep talking about it.

Back OT, I think that conservatory paddling trip that the kayak shop there in Monterey offers looks really cool! May have to do that one with the kid once I'm there.

My degree turned out to be in "Conference Room Dwelling" with a minor in powerpoint The paper reads Information Technology, Networking. I'm currently working on picking up a database administration certification for SQL 2005-2008

I'm overdue for a run and GrassCat is always game. Hollister is only a hour away.

Jon, also grab a tide book. Our AFEES here carries them for Alaska, so check your local store for 'em.

Here ya go; a little salmon shark fishin'.

NICE Margie! So, let me get this right...Dude goes out in a sit-on-top kayak in Birkenstocks and socks and proceeds to catch a damn 400# shark? That's pretty nuts...what's the water temp in that area around that time? Will do on the tide tables...

Today I went to check with the base outdoor adventure guys and the kayak instructor said he's not gettin' in that water until May for lessons. He told me he'd give me a reduced rental on a kayak and wetsuit if I want to get my nuts wet and catch hypothermia on my own, but the water's too cold for him to paddle around in (around 52*F). He also told me to invest in a dry suit when I get to Monterey. I, personally think 5mils will do me fine, but time will tell.

Still looking, but I prolly won't buy anything until I get back to the states. The kayak guy told me to skip the sit-on-top and go straight for an ocean sit-in kayak, but admittedly hasn't spent any time in anything other than glass.

Water temps at Kodiak when I was there were low 40s, and PLENTY of folks kayaked. You 100% always wear a dry suit when you go, and ALWAYS take 2 people, and a VHF in case the orange, and white ass savers have to come get you.

You do not want a sit on top kayak unless you live in key west. Get an Ocean Kayak.

Here's My boat. Osprey HP built from a kit.
Please excuse the weak non lifted raider...Pre 6 inch lift springs.

I cheated, and bout the boat used already built. It had some issues that I had to sort out, but she's a good boat now.

Pygmy Kayaks.

My grandfather has an arctic term that he bought as a kit, and built, and Ive almost got my father convinced to build a queen charolette.

Glad you like it. thanks.

With the move to Monterey, I want to buy a kayak to take out in the bay, be able to throw on top of the rig to take with us for camping and to fish out of. It needs to be a tandem set up so my 11 y/o can jump up front and go with me. I prefer one that is set up to receive rod holders and other fishing equipment. Does anyone have any experience in this area? All opinions and info will be considered. Thanks in advance!

Innova Sunny, they're hand made up in Bellingham WA.
I have 2 of them and love them, going on 6 years of use they still look new. Great fishing boat. 2 x 6' plus 200 lb guys can sit in one comfortably and fish. I have a 12V trolling motor on one of them.

Stable as an anything I've ever been in and tough as nails.
I've dragged them around on gravel for years and loaned them to countless friends for camping and never had to do a patch.
I don't care for sit on tops or traditional kayaks for fishing, way too tippy for me to relax and drink beer on.

And no, the Jeep isn't overloaded, the other tire is sitting in a hole...
