I know you absolutely meant no disrespect, but if you're following the news, there is not much humour to be found in the situation down there at the moment... there has been some real tragedies.

So glad you posted. This will be valuable info for future and current 4D56 owners. Oh, and since you are a newbie here, welcome to the 'Wire! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Sorry, I've been hanging out at ADVrider too much lately Phil, which are a hard bunch. They (Americans) would have been making jokes about 9/11 on 9/12!
Not a funny situation at all. My bad.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hmmm.... I may be able to borrow an injector tester..... wonder how easy it is to clean or rebuild my own injectors... Anyone had one apart? I guess there's some washers and maybe springs or nozzles or something in there?

They are easy to take apart. I used carburettor cleaner and rags to clean the carbon off the nozzles. The Carb. cleaner doesn't dissolve the carbon (no pun intended) but you may know of some other chemical that works. Just be sure to not use any abrasive materials. Always keep one injector un- dismantled so you have a reference to how the washers go back together... one has a groove and goes up a certain way. Diesel mechanics will probably shudder to think we are doing this, but my truck ran better afterward and there was a surprising amount of very fine material in the base of the injector holder when pulled apart. You'll need the copper washers that seal between the head at the bottom of the injectors and new aluminium washers for under the return lines. I didn't take out the copper washers part way up the bore, they were too compressed into the alloy head to risk it. However, I do think that new injectors and a proper set up are required periodically.

Body Damage is Cool
My injectors have never been touched but I really don't see a need to pull mine apart. all this talk has got me wondering but I really have no complaints at all. probably because I have ran conditioner through literally every tank of fuel in the last 2.5 years.

Since I did my injectors three weeks ago I've put on less then 1000km, but there has actually been a noticeable improvement in how the truck runs compared to when I first put them in. 1 crank starts are the norm as long as it's better than -5 out and allot less smoke regardless of the temperature.
The other thing I've noticed is that I'm idling at just under 1000 RPM (when the engine is warm). I can't remember what it was before I did the injectors. What is the normal idle for one of these trucks?

I idle at about 900RPM when it is at operating temperature, not sure if the automatic trucks are any different. mine would probably a good comparison. I will be down in calgary tomorrow Loewen if you want to check mine out. I know you've seen it many many times before but now you have something to compare yours to.

My idle is more in the 700-750 RPM range with the hand throttle off. I've got 88K Km'on it now. It's much smoother if I tweak the idle up to 900 RPM with the throttle. I'm wondering if I need to set it higher. Is there a way to do this (without using the hand throttle)?

I might try turning mine down a bit just to see what it's like. I'll wait till summer though.
Nigel saw my truck for the first time today. He pointed out that it is burning fairly ritch (blue smoke) when warming. Any one else notice this? Any ideas?
