My fuel gauge cant decide on how much gas is in the tank. It will go from a 1/4 tank down to the E symbol when there is a 1/4 tank of gas in there. It sometimes does it when im stopped then after a mile or so will go back to where it should be. Is this a sighn my fuel pump is on its way out? Is it ground wire probalem? I did test my coolent for voltage and it read .11 volt on the meter instead of around 3-5 for being good. The .11 would indecate a lose or bad ground but i dont know if it pertains to what is happening to my fuel gauge.

It shouldn't have anything to do with the fuel pump.
I would check the connection at the sender. Pull back rear carpet and there's an access panel, directly under that is the fuel pump but to your left(drivers side) I think is access to the fuel sender(what tells the gauge how much gas there is).

I would almost put money on your sender being fubar'd. not a big deal, usually an easy fix and cheap fix. but I would check all the electrical connections from the sending unit to the gauge just to rule them out.

i have seen this problem before on Many Many Vehicles.

You have a flat or worn spot on the Fuel Sender Rheostat.

this is a fairly common problem to fuel senders. Since most people tend to NOT fill their vehicles up fully; the sender operates in the lower half most of the time. This will create a worn spot.

It is imposible to repair it ( unless you are me ) and you will more than likely need a new or used sender for the vehicle.

It is doubtful that the gauge is bad as they tend to crap out completeley. I doubt the float is bad else it would act up at any fuel level.

Good luck!

Need a Spot
I fixed mine as well. It's like soldering hair! I broke more wires than I had before I started. In the end, I was able to fix it.

ok...here is the deal.

The sender portion is seperate from the actual fuel pump electronics in most cases. even though it comes as one unit.

The trick is to find a junkyard and pull The unit, then dissect it to remove the Rheostat. Small to large wire type cutters may be needed. It most times can be bent back and removed no problem.

Take care to examine the rheostat for flat spots too! Don't want a used part worse than the one you got.

as a last resort: fork over the cash for the unit!

My Raider gets to 1/4 and eventualy runs out of gas while still at 1/4 but that is because of the massive dents in fuel tank! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
