The hydraulic tensioner is not meant to take up any slack. That's why you have to use the special tool to pre-tension the timing belt. If you do it right, the grenade pin will come out with no resistance. If not properly pre-tensioned, then when the belt stretches, you may risk the hydraulic tensioner not being able to keep it tight enough.
