What in the name of all that is holy smells so bad in my truck????
It smells like, hmmm, maybe, gear oil being burned in a trash fire???
It is definitely oil of some kind. It's not leaking, puking, smoking, overheating, etc. It starts fine, drives fine, for about twenty minutes, then the smell starts. At that point, it starts to idle funny, and my "in gear" idle oil pressure seems a little low. Comes right back up when I take off. Idles about 250-300 rpm high. Just seems a little rough in general.

Last night it was so bad that it stunk up the entire house. I first noticed it as I came to stop light and was behind a fire engine. I thought it was them until I got home. I gave everything a once over, checked the fluids, etc, and couldn't find anything obvious, so I drove it to work this morning.
Fortunately, it's not raining, so it's gonna live outside tonight.

What's this gonna cost me

Any chance it is coolant? My 95 is loosing coolant and burning it somewhere. No puddles anywhere. Definitely need to top it off regularly. The weather has been too bad to deal with it so far, as I can't easily get it into the garage unless I loose the rack and air down.

Is your turbo leaking oil internally? Is the smell coming from the exhaust?

When my first turbo had a bad seal, it would blow smoke whenver the oil built up, and you then were down on the accel. Pushed it out and burned it on the way it would seem.

Here's a long shot... any chance it could be leaking capacitors on the ECU? I've never smelled it, but I understand it's pretty rank...

Just a thought. I hope you find it quickly!

Kind of along the same lines: can you locate a general area outside the truck where you can smell it strongest (if at all)? If not, and you only smell it inside, I wonder if it could be a shorted wire and the insulation is burning off. ECU would affect idle. I imagine other circuits could just as well.

Thanks guys-
It does seem to only be inside the truck. I'll check it out asap! I do know I've got at least one partial short in the radio circuit. Sometimes when I shift into gear, the radio will cut out while passing "R". I'll start there.

Here's another possibility based on your description. It seems to start when the Cat conv heats up. When I was a service manager time to time we would have a car come in with the same concern. More often than not we found that a plastic shopping bag had glued itself to the exhaust usually around the Cat (they act as a magnet for these things). Once driving and warmed up the God awful plastic/oily smell started reeking. The problem is it's hard to see because it welds itself to the CAT and might just look like a brown area of film on the metal - pretty much looking the same as without. If so the only way to get rid of it is endless time with a wire wheel/brush or just let it burn away by itself once you've established this as the cause. It's pretty impossible to get that off - we never had much success. You could smell when one came into the drive area - even back to our offices.

Look for that.

Thanks Pete,
I could check around under there, but I don't have a cat. Could still be stuck in the exhaust somewhere though.
