Remove the hose at the turbo inlet and check the wobble in the axle of the turbo wheel. Should be way less than 1mm. More and you need to rebuild the turbo. Remove the turbo to intercooler hose, and check the inside for VERY oily deposits, a sign that the turbo oil seals are leaking. Remove the turbo oil line at the turbo and make sure it's puking oil when you crank the truck. Don't let it puke for more than a couple of seconds. Remove the turbo oil return hose at the timing cover and check for oil returning to the pan.

Here's a long shot... any chance it could be leaking capacitors on the ECU? I've never smelled it, but I understand it's pretty rank...

Just a thought. I hope you find it quickly!

Eddy,
I'm sure I'm due, if not past due for a turbo rebuild, but everything I've heard and read leads me to believe that I would have bad smoke out the tailpipe? I know it did when I was backfeeding oil through the drain line.

Thanks a bunch.

-BTW it still seems to be driving the same... Smell has not gone away, but seems to be getting a tiny bit better all the time. Definitely doesn't seem to be continuing or getting worse.
It's making me think more and more along the way of the grocery bag theory.

I remember a while back Click and Clack talking about this same thing. I think it might even have been a puzzler...

Possible Skunk collision? Ran one over one time that was already dead and the smell lasted a week, most noxious smell I ever experienced in my lift.

Roll Me Over
uh dave... he who smelt it first dealt it first .
i like the skunk theory though, ive hit several... the smell did linger, but not for anymore than a day or so. just out of curiosity, how much does the kiwi sit and would there be the chance of mabey a critter of some sort getting in then dying and now stinking up the joint? i had a mouse get into my old dodge somehow... the smell was dam near gone when i found it. looked like a piece of grey chewed up gum with a tail .

No sitting anymore. It's my daily driver. I know it's not a dead animal, and definitely not skunk. This is petroleum in nature. Kinda smells like gear oil. Old nasty gear oil.

I've been under the hood all day- Well, actually, I finally removed the hood.

I can't find the source of my smell yet, but I have come across lots of other stuff that needs attention.

I checked the IC pipes and the tip of the turbo. Very little shaft play, and spins nice and freely. Still nice and dry... dirty, like regular old, livin' in the desert, DIRT, but no oil. I patched up some holes in the air can that I had neglected to attend to earlier. Might explain the dirt?
I had the IC pipes opened up just the other day to check them for oil. Wanted to check, because I'm re-adding an oil separation device for the rear valve cover port and tying it in to the acordian boot. Only difference between this setup and the factory one is that I'll need to drain the can, instead of it draining into the pan. I've also added a small separator in the PCV hose between the PCV and the plenum. It's catching about 2tbsp per day, of really nasty, frothy white water/oil mix. Nice to not be burning that anymore. My smoky warm up is now gone.
I found a bad fuel leak on my #4 injector. The upper O-ring was not seating in the fuel rail. Might explain why it always smells gassy, especially under boost. I've got to go out in the morning and get a few things. I want to make the fuel rail a little (a lot) easier to access. I did lots of things while in the build process that seemed like a great idea at the time, but now are just a pain in the arse.

I checked the plugs- They look bad. Not terrible, but bad. 2,3, and 4 are just black, sooty, over rich. #1 is blown apart and melted. I've also been reading up, and I don't know how, but where most questers are running 7s, 8s or even 9s, I've got 5s in here??? Don't know how I wound up with that hot of a plug, but it may answer some of my previous "head feels really hot even though the water isn't" questions.

Under the valve cover looks great. Oil looks nice and not burned up, no grinding away like last time around.

Don't quite know where to go next- Got to get this stuff buttoned up first I guess.

Any other ideas? I'm all ears

I had an awful animal/oil smell this weekend, but I knew it was because it was the first time I drove more than a few feet in 4x4, after about 5 miles in 14 inches of snow, it got smelly, went away after a few minutes but that may have been partly from the almost blizzard conditions.

I get a strange smell from mine whenever it rains. Somehow

I think my exhaust runs hot enough to make road splash smell badly.

I have never found an oil leak, although I need to look a bit harder.
