Saw this add in Craigs and I wondered if the 2.6 would bend valves if the timing gears were installed incorrectly.

I think the carb motor is an interference motor, here is why.

I took a quick look at the head on my bench and the outer edge of the intake valve is about .18" from the deck of the head.

Assume the head gasket is .040 thick and the deck height of the piston is -.040 the valve to piston clearance is .260".

The valve lift is about .380" but it comes in at an angle so the actual distance into the chamber is less. A quick calculation puts it at .31".

Based on that the flat top piston 2.6 is an interference motor.

The Gates web site says it's not, but if forced to choose, I'd go with Kevin until I get a chance to hand turn a motor and check it with the cam sprocket off...

I have a bent 2.6 head right now off my dad's motor yes it will mess the valves up. (Intake only)


1997 Montero LS with a motor swap a 1990 V6 12valve ported heads full 2.5in Ex I run stock tire size for Daily use, off road have 33x12.5 working on going trubo.
