Mitch... When I was in CO, what sidearm were you using? I vaguely remember black semiauto, but this was before I was really much into guns, so I can't place it.

Roll Me Over
Hey Curtis. Naw, I was still carrying the 66.

Just the expression "cocked and locked" gives a wheelgun man like me the willies!

Since we moved here, the firearms have been dismantled in the attic. I had to get down the ol' Marlin 39A (model made between 1946 and 1953) and take care of a skunk problem in the barn the other night. The kids were fascinated. I gotta get them out shooting.

Nah... It's MUCH different than a wheelgun. Imagine if your wheelgun had a safety that made it impossible to pull the trigger when the hammer was back, and the safety was engaged. Condition1 is great.

Thats a shame. Is your new state gun unfriendly?

No, it's Oklahoma. Can easily get a CCL. I just put them up there when we were moving in and kinda forgot

Body Damage is Cool
That is not a S&W #36, but an older Rossi #68 .38 special I bought with no stocks for $65.00. That set of Pachmayr's set me back $39.00 and a 50 mile round trip drive to Gainesville, GA to buy them. As that gun is no longer made, I had little choice. I gave it to my F-I-L, got it back when he passed away and sold it to my brother.

That is a S&W #629 .44 mag...I bought it for bear protection in north Georgia while I was painting my in-laws house last spring. It is difficult to stand on a ladder with 3#'s of steel hanging off you hip but I was up there alone mostly, and do not hear to good. Actually, I have gotten to where I do not see to good either. Mountain guns have a different contour barrel. Different versions of S&W's have been made with unfluted cylinders. The 3" barrel N frames pop up from time to time. If you really want one, and ain't picky, I will buy the next reasonable one I see and contact you. If you don't take it, someone will. They are a bit much for me.

Griffin, GA is southwest of Atlanta, used to have a company there called Taylor Police Supply. One of my best friends back then dated a Taylor girl, a busty blonde with the morals of a alley cat, and we got some good deals there for two or three years. I think he got the best deal of all, , sometimes right on top of her daddy's desk.

The place I shop is Dana Safety Supply, formerly Southeastern Supply, prior to that Jack Frost's Southeastern Supply. I have been buying there about thirty years. I bought a S&W #60 there when Colt dropped the D frames and S&W J frames were impossible to get. I still have the #60.

Gun shows suck around here, honestly. Especially since the last election. Everything is high and it costs $10.00 to get in the door.

As a officer, you should love this one. A S&W #58 .41 magnum. This is also a bear gun, and a handful with the service stocks on it. I got it off the internet, from south Georgia. I threw that Tyler T Adapter away, then the guy who pointed the ad out to me sent an email offering $20.00 for it if I didn't want it. I stood in the rain at 9:00 p.m. digging through my trash to find it, then mailed it to him as a gift. Never liked them.

I've taken a bunch of pictures for the fellows on the 1911.org collector site. They're still evaluating, but so far, the concensus is that it's a late 1944 with original phosphate/parkerized "Parko-Lubrite" finish and all correct parts except the magazine.... but from other things I've read it could be original as well.

The barrel is correct for the year and has one of the more uncommon "D" proofmarks.

There are no marks suggesting it was ever rebuilt in any government armory.

I've completely cleaned it again (including dismantling of the magazine and mainspring housing assembly), lightly oiled and reassembled it - it's looking nice and it's really, really smooth as silk :

I'm not certain yet, but I think it's the real deal.

Curtis, it looks like the only thing I need for 100% authenticity is a magazine. The correct one is all-over blued (not 2-tone) and marked with "C-R", "C-S" or "C-L" on the bottom of the baseplate and "R", "S" or "L" on top of the baseplate toe.

If you or Bruce run across one in decent shape, please grab it for me.

Frank

Frank, look at item #9266, is this what you want?

Hugh Brock used to live in Tucker where I was his mailman. His business was in Decatur where I was a customer. Hugh is very knowledgeable about Mil-Surplus stuff, as that is his business and he is a retired colonel, IIRC. Hugh can sound abrasive over the phone, but is overall a good man and can be trusted to send you something that will be as he described it.

Has anyone on Jouster offered a value on this yet, or offered to purchase it from you?

Yes, that's one of the magazines that are considered period correct for this serial number.

I also found one here that looks like it's in excellent condition, but it has already attracted interest.

I'd like to find one with some original finish on it.

I found the jouster thread format a little confusing and it appeared that you can post only one picture per post. I've posted it here for information and opinions and the forum moderator seems to have taken an interest - but no value or offers yet.

Frank
