I once read the summary of a massive Brit study on the guys who watch gauges for a living. Thousands of hours of testing on dials and needles vs. numerical readouts (the study is so old they are talking we are talking about printed numbers on drums that you read thru windows), and the optimum for quick read and instant recognition of anomalous state was dial gauges about 1" in diameter.

And I'm kinda old school...

I used to drool thru the S-W and Autometer and Aircraft Spruce gauge catalogs. I always wanted to put an artificial horizon airplane gauge in place of the inclinometer...
