This is an age old debate. Most go with the rear mounted. But there are those that argue that a forward shackle will aid the vehicle in climbling/negotiating over an obstacle as it moves the axle slightly forward during compression.

I would go with the rear mounted personally, just due to the fact that if you hit something ( ie a BF rock) off road your less likely to damage a solid well built mount than you would having a big honkin shackle limiting your approach angle.
