Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
All of a sudden my 91 pickup wont go into gear when running. However when shut down it will go into gear but when started again, it pulls right away even though the clutch is depressed. The clutch arm is moving but has no affect on disengaging the clutch. I am thinking the release bearing may have fallen out of the holder. Any thoughts on this?

Just went through a clutch change. If the slave is working he has fluid, although if not bled properly it may not be moving enough to release the clutch. How is the pedal pressure? Couldn't have dropped your throwout, unless it somehow split in two. Maybe a bent fork so it's not pushing the throwout up far enough? Or the release prongs on the pressure plate are bent/worn, so once again you aren't pushing the pressure plate in far enough to release the clutch.

When I checked the fluid , it looked pretty muddy and I said to meself, I never recall seeing brake fluid that looked like it. So now I am wondering if there is enough condensation in it after 18 yrs to effect it. My manual states hat on certain years, the starter must come out before the trans. Anyone know if its necessary on a 91 4cyl.

Start simple. CHANGE THAT FLUID! If it's truley that old with no changing, it's long overdue and you should feel lucky you weren't out in the boonies broke down. And cleaning out/rebuilding the slave and possibly the master clutch cylinder would be in order. Then you can see if you have to remove the engine or tranny in order to get to the clutch problem.

There is also a known issue with the clutch pedal bracket cracking, and not engaging the clutch all the way. I don't recall the exact years, but it wouldn't hurt to look under the dash as you push down the pedal with your hand, looking for obvious excessive play.
